Quote I received from The Little Speed Shop in Rochester, NY for all fluids replacement. Good, bad or ugly?

They have only got 1 litre of auto box fluid it will be approx 6 and it needs a filter, I would only use ZF lifeguard 8 no after market.

The transfer case is dtf1 oil not dual clutch transmission oil and the labour time is very high on the transfer case.

Also you are not supposed to change the centre diff (it's hard to get the correct level) oil only the 2 outer chambers.

As an aside I have posted about this previously on this sub forum that the plug isn't a traditional level plug it needs to be measured in or it will mix with the middle chamber. I did upload BMW's instructions somewhere on the f85/86 forum.

The rear diff is hugely expensive and a bad service can be as damaging as no service

The coolant circuits are supposed to be vacuum filled not conventionally filled and bled also, I have a bmw k1300 bike and it's the same, something to do with an air trap in the hose.

///MCollection I did notice the issues you mentioned in the quote. I will talk to them.

Transmission Fluid - needs 7 litres oil and filter kit (24-00-7-855-263)
Transfer Case - DTF1 (83-22-2-409-710) - do you know how much fluid I need? They did quote me 4 hours of labor for Transfer case which sounds about correct

The shop I got the quote are M car experts. I wonder if they gave got my quote mixed up with something. I will talk to them.

Thanks a lot for the comments.

Transfer case takes approximately 500ml of fluid. One jug of dtf1 should do. For t case you also need to recalibrate the tcase adaptation with ista+.

KLR X5M is correct as above, reset transfer case adaptions

If there M experts you should be fine, maybe just a typo. The ZF service kits come with 7 litres as above but I've not used the 7th bottle yet. And the amount for transfer case I believe is closer to 500ml than a litre but maybe slightly above. The DFT is in litre bottles so strong chance you will be buying a litre which is neither here nor there on the cost.

As a *rough* comparison, my local dealer quoted me about 650 to do the transfer case and transmission services. The labor costs on some of this looks a bit extreme in my opinion.

I had all of these services performed on my X5M earlier this year, although I bought my own fluids and parts, I lessened the impact to my wallet. And paid for labor only

Just got quoted $473 (labor only) for Transfer Case service at Funfzehn.

Does anyone know of a trusted shop in So Cal that'll do it for less?

I'm going to one next week for a full service. Pricing was the best I've found so far. Will let you know how it goes.

Given that the transfer case fluid change will take any competent tech about 30 minutes, I’d say $473 is a bit steep.

Yeah that's what I thought.

Maybe the book states 4-5 hours?

im not sure why you would need to change intercooler fluid unless perhaps way over 100k.
I get gearbox and center diff fluids as well... but again, 80k miles or more. Having had a couple of these X5s and an X3. The only issue I had was a first gen X3 center diff wearing out the plastic gear.

Just like all fluids in your vehicles, there not lifetime fluids. They all need to be changed at some point. The intercooler fluids is the same as your engine coolant, I change mine every four years.

As yourself this, why would you change your engine coolant and not your charge air fluids. I know the the charge air is a closed loop system, but no fluid last forever.

That seems like a really good deal for all of that.
Is it a reputable shop?

Curious to know what their labor is for just the transfer case change.

I believe it was $150 for transfer case. And yes, they only work on BMWs and mostly M cars.

The quote for the transfer case is way too high in my opinion, anything between $150-200 is reasonable, as the cross brace has to be remove to gain access to the fill/drain plugs.

Yeah, I called a few more shops and you're right, average quote is $130, and should take only 1 hour of labor.
