Looking at a 2016 CPO X5M!!!!!

So I am looking at a 2016 X5M CPO and I am concerned about reliability issues with these cars. It will be under warranty for another 2 years but just wanted to get some feed back from you guys. I am also looking at a 2016 X5 5.0 and wanna know if the extra $13k for the X5M is worth it. Anyway you guys are the best. Please give me your opinions. Thanks.

Looks like you're coming from a 2015 M6. Cannot comment much about reliability; I've only had my X5M for about 1 yr, but no issues. I have a '16 X5M with 27,100 miles at this point. Warranty expires Oct 2019. I thought I was going to miss my M6 GC but haven't looked back since trading it in for the X5M.

I recommend having an independent shop perform pre-purchase inspection though.

Good luck!

No I still have the M6, this is for the wife but I am just trying to get as much info as possible. I know the M6 motor and drive train are the same but my M6 only has 15k miles and the X5M has 46k. It is a CPO so I am good for about 2 years unless I buy extended but I was just seeing what kinda issues I can expect. Thanks for the info.

I have 54k miles on my 2015 and only issue (besides the brake squeal - which went away after my first brake pad replacement) was my steering column needed to be replaced which others both with X5s and X5Ms of this generation have reported.

I have not had to add one drop of oil between my regular oil services.

Honestly can say the best and most fun vehicle I've ever owned.

I traded in my F80 M3 for a CPO 2016 F85 X5M and while I'll always miss the M3, I have no complaints about the truck.

Currently working through the brake squeal issue with my SA but the only problem I've had is that my steering column needs some TLC (known issue). 36k miles on it currently and even though the warranty is up this fall, I am planning on keeping it (unless something catastrophic happens or another vehicle catches my eye).

No Complaints at all I've had my X5M for 2 years and other than brake squeal and the steering column noise which was common (both issues corrected by dealer) this is probably the best vehicle I've ever owned as far as being a total package.

I have only had my X5M for a few months but love it. My transfer case was leaking and was replaced under warranty. Other than that no issues including not having to add oil yet.

Others - what is the steering column issue that is mentioned? My makes noises on adjustment and if there is an issue, want to inform my SA sooner than later. Thanks in advance!

Eventually the electric motors for height/telescoping adjustment stop working. And the only solution is complete steering column replacement.

This.

Was a no questions asked replacement by the dealer under warranty.

Second. Of all the things on my punch list, this was the first thing they tackled.

My F85 was purchased with 60k miles and no warranty. I installed Dinan Stage 1 myself and DD my F85 no issues so far. Why u worrying about reliability if it's CPO?

I have owned a lot of used Ms. Some good and others bad. They are cars just like every other car. If reliability and maintenance is a concern than shop for Honda's.

Never wasted time with cheaper X5. Not my style. Good luck

I hear you and I currently own a 2015 Dinan Stage 2 M6 so I know they can be reliable. I was just curious about what I should have the dealer do as preventative stuff. I am going today to pick up the X5M. Thanks so much for all your input guys. Now it's time to start shopping mods. 😜

Nice enjoy the process! Lots of good mods on our classified forums but many are overpriced. Best deal I found was my tuner for $700. Lots of overpriced stuff. F85 is now old platform. Plenty of options for used parts 💯

DinanM6,

I am new to the forum, actually this is my first post. I am in the exact same position as you and finally made a decision today. Bought a 2016 cpo x5m from my local Boston dealer. I too was nervous about reliability issues and this forum actually helped me make my decision. I will post pictures Monday when I pick it up!

Thanks guys for the info. Went ahead and bought the X5M CPO I was looking at. Love this thing already. Velos is doing a tune for me and bought a few other goodies on the classifieds already. Just trying to decide on intake and exhaust. I have all Dinan on my M6 but not sure if I am gonna go that route again. 🤔
