Extended Warranty and purchase X5M at end of lease ... thoughts?
13 months into my 2016 X5M .. I am loving it. Out of the 17 BMWs we have had this by far has set the bar. I am seriously considering purchasing it when the lease is done ... so here are the 2 dilemmas I am facing:
- My trusted service advisor for all these years told me that it is a real BAD idea to purchase after as any work that needs to be done on it after the warranty will be stupid expensive. He said this is one of those models you are safer to get a new one. - Extended warranty? the finance guy has a 100K 7 Years (from in service date) for approximately 6K. He said that if I wait till the end of the lease with about 40K miles on the vehicle it will cost between 12 - 15K for the same warranty!! So per the service advisor, if you buy the warranty at the end of the lease, you might as well use it as a down payment for a new one. Only reluctance in pulling the trigger on the warranty is the release of the X3M in 2018.. so understandably I would also leave my options open. So 2015 owners..you have had yours the longest and issues after 24 months?

My buy out at the end of lease is 62.8k, I am thinking about it.
looks like the used market is decent for the x5m. leasing a new one would depend on the rates when it comes time to turn it in. there's a lot of variables.

Warranties are not that expensive. Depending on the plan about $4-6K plus if you are a three year lease, you still have a year of new car warranty so a year to purchase the warranty before the 4 years is up.

I guess all it takes is one major issue, but i'd consider just leasing a new one rather than plunking a 4k extended warranty on a used car.

I purchased an aftermarket warranty for my S85 V10 as the car is known to have issues. Mine was for 8 years 60k for around 8K once I hit 45k miles. Although I'm not driving SMG and was lucky enough to have a 6MT they did replace my blown motor for only a $250 deductible which was amazing. Funny enough it will go all the way to January 2020 on a 2008 M6 where my 2015 X6M will be out of warranty before that. PM me if you want any details. I will be looking into warranties around my lease buyout in a few years and hopefully I can find something just as good since this company does not offer any services in Canada now that I moved here.

Reviving an old thread...my '17 is at end of lease next month. I was all set to order the F95. 3 different dealers will offer no discount off the 118K MSRP. I'm not impressed with the photos of the exterior of the new X5M to say the least. I find the interior of the the 2020 X5 M50 I drove cluttered and not impressive either (especially the fugly gauges). The F85 is a gorgeous car. The F95...not so much. So...I'm pretty hesitant to buy this thing without even driving it. And...I'd have to buy another winter setup for 4K because BMW changed the bolt pattern from the last 20 years. I'm strongly considering buying my lease at the 64K residual. Car will be at 45K miles. I realize this is not a great deal, but we know how we drove and maintained it, and love the color combo (LBB/silverstone). I plan on buying an exclusionary warranty and keeping it to 7 years/100k. Am I a fool for thinking this is a good idea? Any comments welcome.

We purchase vs. leasing because we keep our cars for at least 5 to 6 years and put over 130K+miles on them; and we buy the extended BMW Warranty because of the cost of repairs when you get in the 50k+ miles, after warranty work. I recently purchased the 7year/100K mile platinum warranty for our 2017 X5 for $5,150. We plan to keep the car for 7 years...and we love it. Great SAV.
BTW. You should shop around for the best deal as my local dealer wanted $6,000+. |

CPO runs out in September. I purchased the maintenance plan so all service done at dealership from first owner through me. I picked it up with 35k miles. I have 53 now. Biggest failures: -xfer case. Lost fluid and needed replacement. Clutches were shot. -one rear suspension air bag That's about it short of maintenance. |

They knocked a little off the residual for me. Exclusionary warranty sold by the dealership itself (not BMW) to 7/100 is 8K ouch. Still a decent deal to keep it. Which we will.

I bought but can still change my mind on ultimate care plus for 7/125. Cost $5000. I figure in that time I'll need at least one brake/rotor set on all corners, 5 oil changes, 2 brake fluid changes, 2 sets of plugs. Not sure what the other service intervals are since you can't look it up anywhere for the F85...maybe gear oil? Who knows. Any opinions on whether all this will amount to at least $5k? Think I should I skip the ultimate care plus?
Thanks in advance |

5k was the maintenance plan. The extended warranty to 7 years/unlimited mileage was 7k. Yes that’s a lot. And in Kansas we are also taxed on both of those. But at this point I am just glad I won’t have to worry about spending anything on this car other than batteries and tires.

Maintenance through BMW. Warranty through Hendrick auto group (my local BMW dealer)...It is slightly more comprehensive than the BMW platinum. They CPOd it so i’m guessing they are using BMW to underwrite it. The best deal I was offered on the BMW plan was from dealership in CA. I can PM her contact info.
