Battery fit

My wifes 2015 x5 50i is still on its original battery and thought ot may be time for a new one as we started to get the battery discharge message on cold weather. I found a replacement but measured the one in the car and it appears to be smaller than the one I found https://www.batteriesplus.com/produc...ltra/sli95ragm

Ours is 13in, replacement is 15.5". Also ours is 92ah and this is 105ah. I assume i can register it to a newer capacity with ista?

Should i be concerned about the size being larger?

Size only matters if it doesn't fit in the location. More amps won't hurt.

105Ah OEM battery will fit fine. Yes, you need to register the new battery.

Don't conflate registering and coding as the same thing...they are different. Any new battery needs to be [/b]"registered"[/b].

If you replace the battery with one that has different specs (higher/lower CCA, CA, RC, or Amp hour)...then you will need to CODE this new battery info as well as register the replacement battery.

If the OP's original battery was only 13" long...then it probably was a 49/H8 battery class size which probably was a 90/92 amp hour battery. The new 15.5" battery is a 95R/H9 battery class size and as mentioned...has a higher 105 Ah spec. This change will require coding as well as registration.

You can use the chart below to get an idea of general battery specs and sizes. The chart is for East Penn manufactured batteries...but the ones produced by Johnson Controls and Excide have very similar specs...and the lenth/height info will be the same.

TIP: don't throw away any additional parts you may need to hook up the battery correctly. The battery needs to be vented, so you will need to reuse the little black elbow that connects the vehicles vent tube to the battery. And look for a plug to place in the vent hole on the other side of the battery. Some manufacturers put the plug into a little baggy stuck to the side...and some manufacturers build a "knock-out" vent hole plug into one of the protective terminal covers. If your battery has this knock-out plug...don't throw the cover away until you remove the plug and place it into the vent hole on the other side of the battery from the vent tube. (see pic below for an example)




Pic below shows the knock-out vent plug that is required to fill the battery's other vent hole on the opposite side of the one you'll be using to vent the battery to the exterior of the vehicle:

That is correct, the oem battery is 92ah H8 and the replacement is 105ah H9. Luckily I found a direct deplacement duracell H8 to avoid coding complications. I've replaced the battery on my previous 435i before and I am familiar with the process, only had to register that since it was same amperage. In this case I was worried about the battery length since my old 435i battery well could only fit one size but the f15 seems to be able to accommodate diff sizes but wasn't certain

You may want to check with dealer as BMW offered free replacement battery for the 50i as part of service especially since you are still on the original one.
