F15 N63TU and TU2 Reliability

I'm currently looking for an X5 50i, but I've read some horror stories. I know the TU started around 2012/13 models including the e70, so the F15 for sure has it, and that it was revised again in 2016. Question is, are the TU and on far more reliable and just carrying the bad press from previous models? Is it worth spending the extra money on a 2016 model? How can I tell a 2016 X5 has the TU2 for sure?

I'm looking for experiences on just TU models please. And also, how's the mileage on these?

Bottom line, DO get the extended warranty, DO sell when out of warranty
I'm planning to extend as much as possible, we really love ours.

I might be wrong but there is no TU2 for the F15/16 platform just the TU which already is the updated version from the E70/71 platform I know this because my M550i is TU2 and that was produced from 2017+. That being said I personally would never own a BMW V8 out of warranty unless you are capable of holding a wrench. There are many here in forums with luck owning a 50i out of warranty but that is real small sample compared to actual issues people have with 50i's in the real world whats interesting is lately with our cars aging Ive noticed more and more 50i issue related threads. Ive witnessed friends and customers going through nightmares with owning a BMW V8 and trust me when I tell you it will get costly.

TU here (2014 F15) with 100k miles, no issues so far, no oil consumption. I am a bit worried about the bad press these engines get. But I also turn my own wrenches, so if things do go south, I've just accepted the fact that I'd have to drop a new engine in. For the ~$6k it'd cost me, I'm willing to risk it for the joy I get driving a 650hp/650tq SUV

14 50i here as well...72k miles and zero issues engine related.

People are more likely to complain and raise issues than say "my cars great". Yes, I got extended warranty on the engine when I bought it used, just in case but that was because it's a BMW....and any engine problem could be costly.

I'll personally replace this one with a newer 50i or the X5M, still undecided....but will never go back to V6...

Agreed that any bmw engine with an issue would be costly but the 50i's are on another level when it comes to longevity. The end year projection for 2019 at a dealer that my inlaw is a tech at had V8s break down engine wise 16 to 1 compared to the i6s with the majority being non M *50i vehicles and it mostly has to do with cooling issues which bmw never seems to correct BMW has always been known for its i6 and never its V8 which has improved but still has a long ways to go imo and I say this with currently owning a M550i go figure

I’m not sure what articles you’re reading, and why nobody who’s replied so far has clarified that the N63TU is F15 specific. It didn’t start in 2012/2013 and was never available on the E70 (model year 2007-2013 in North America). The N63TU was introduced with the F15 (model year 2014-2018) and is exponentially more reliable than the N63 (non-TU, or ‘technical update’) in the E70.

There was no additional update in 2016 and there is no such thing as TU2 for an X5. At least not that I’ve ever heard of.

I’d be very curious where you read about this stuff?

Thanks for posting. I should have clarified in my prior post these engines were used in other BMW models, so it’s possible the N63TU was available in 2012/2013, though I’m not up to speed on the 5, 6, & 7 series cars and when they may have received the update. Still never heard of TU2

I have a 2015 50i x5 with 56k mikes. No issues at all on my end. Acquired the vehicle with 36k mikes and had lower oil pan gasket , muffler clamp and front control arm replaced under CPo warranty. I change oil 5k miles and nothing is wrong related to engine or drivetrain. Plan on keeping car until 100k
