My shop said it wasn't additional air flow but that it failed a smoke test on one side indicating an improper seal. At least I think that's what they said
Thanks for the info. If tighten the clamp on both side, unless there is a hole in the tube, not sure where can leak. anyway they sent me couples of replacement tube and filter. I tighten it very hard on both sides but still throw code.

Decided to try one more thing and used the O rubber ring from original filters and put it on the AFE plastic tubing that was going into the filters. Hopefully to eliminate any outside air introduction...
Cant post pic here so see pictures on the first page of this post.
I cleared the codes again and will give it few days. This is the last attempt.

The dry filters do not flow as well and have more filtration.

The intake does sound nice tho

I had dry filters with no issues and no leak issues. My oiled filters just came in today so I’m curious to see by logs if they actually flow more I’ll report back after a day or 2

Edit: first thing I noticed is the turbos don’t sound as loud with the pro5r filters

So AFE is sending me today dry filters to try instead of oil ones to see if this fixes the issue. This is the last resort before returning the intake.
Will update later.

Update:

AFE mailed me 2 white/dry filters to try free of charge. I cleared the light and installed new filters. One thing I noticed is that the filters sit really snug inside the plastic casing compared to the blue ones.
Will drive for few days and report back.
This is last test before the return. Fingers crossed

Mine's sitting in the garage awaiting your verdict.

But damn I like those RK intakes. $2200 new though?!?

The troubleshooting going on with people using AFE eventually pushed me onto RK. I was able to get a good deal, 1800 including install. But if it's any consolation, my mechanic said he prefers RK over the other intakes for our platform. Hope it works out for everyone using AFE though.

So 40+ miles and around 6 engine starts NO Check Engine light with these new white dry filters. I dont feel any difference between blue or white too.

Will give it another few days but looks like the way to go is to use dry filters with this AFE intake.

And instead they are going to make new tubes and send those to me. Good response from AFE imo.

New tubes....interesting

Let us know how that will work out. So far dry filters work.

Update: new DRY White filters, probably 30+miles and few engine starts later and I have no issues. Looks like dry filters is the way to go.
Question is how this AFE better than my Dinan setup...
I like the turbos spool sound but $600 for a sound, not sure

Later will try to test both with my Perfomance Box. Just need to find an empty road.

More to come

Philly, do you feel any improvement to throttle response? I like the sound but not sure it's worth the money. However, the sound and the improvement to throttle response does make it worth it to me.

Wet Filters are fine to use Gents. All you have to do is dab them with a kitchen paper towel to get all excess oil off and you'll be fine. All of you who are experiencing CEL's check your install, make sure there are no air leaks etc and clean the MAP sensors with some CRC MAF or Electrical contact cleaner. I bet you will have no issues after that.

Keep us updated.

Without testing I can say that the only difference in the city, local streets is sound only. When I took it on the turnpike at higher speeds the car feels slightly more responsive (hopefully not placebo effect) but that's probably correct as more cold air gets in.
If you have Dinan I dont think it makes sense to change to AFE right away but compared to stock filters it is an improvement and you can feel it.

I did all that twice (minus papertowell) and still was getting a CEL.
Oil wasnt dripping from my filters you almost couldn't feel it so at least in my case dont think that's a problem.
Also, this time I did not clean the MAF sensors after I replaced blue with dry white ones so if there was some oil residue on the sensors the CEL would kick in again but in my case dry filters fixed it.

Just to put that theory to rest I can take the paper towell and my wife's hair dryer and will dry those suckers It's a 5 min job to replace the filters so why not.
Stay tuned

yeah try out because i am pretty sure the FRESH oil from the filters got on the sensors as the pressure of AIR is immense, Plus you never feel the oil dripping but its still a lot especially on K&N's lol

I clean my E70 X5M MAP sensors every time after cleaning and reoiling the BMC filters. Looking forward to your results with dried oiled filters lol

So i finally got around to install my intake with the blue filters and of course i got the cel haha the weather was warm enough today in ny n the rain held off so i decided to give this a go.... i took everyone's advice and still got hit with the cel... I currently have a full afe exhaust with the resonators, no dp's...like most of you are saying i can't really notice a diff with performance but the sounds you can hear from accelerating n letting of the gas is worth every penny! Tomorrow im getting my dinan stage 2 installed so let's see if that will get rid of the cel.. Meantime there hasn't been a great day to wash this girl...
