F85 X5 M Winter Wheel Set

Hi everybody,

Picking up a F85 Bmw X5M on Friday from the Bmw dealer and realized that the winter set is 255/50/18 whereas the summers are the set of 21"
Is it me or the winter set of wheels they're giving me isn't the proper set of wheels for the X5M?

Thank you

Supposed to go down in wheel size for winter tires.

You want thicker rubber (less metal) as thin winter tires don't perform well in snow.

The proper set for your F85 is the BMW OEM 611M Winter wheel/tires combo. This set was created for the F85/86.
“Driving with confidence this winter doesn’t mean sacrificing performance. Introducing the style 611M Winter Complete Wheel set for the F85 X5M and F86 X6M. This high performance 20 inch wheel set is fitted with BMW Approved cold weather tires to make sure you get the most out of this winter driving season.
Includes RDCi sensors, valve stems, mounted and balanced on Pirelli Scorpion Winter r-f* (Non Run-Flat) high performance winter tires – Just install and go!
This kit is sold pre-assembled for easy installation and the wheel and tire combination is approved by BMW for the F85 X5M and F86 X6M.
Wheel Set Dimensions
Wheels: Style 611M Front - 10Jx20 ET40, Rear - 10.5Jx20 ET32
Tires: Pirelli Scorpion Winter r-f* (Non Run-Flat) 285/40R20 108V
BMW Winter Complete Wheel assemblies are mounted and high speed balanced & include Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors. Please consult with your authorized BMW Center for full specifications, stock availability and program details.”

I’ve read that 18” wheels won’t clear the brakes on the F85/86, plus I’d want the set that was developed for the vehicle.

Hope this helps.

The basics of winter wheels and tires is that you want more sidewall because of rougher road conditions (think potholes though they are year round) and narrower so to have more contact pressure as well as less area pushing through snow. And of course winter tires are softer so to have better grip.

Going from 21 to 18 seems like a big differential. Usually it is an inch. That said, for us we stuck with 18 for our winter and summer. Mostly because the off season wheel/tire becomes the spare when traveling as they are all go flat tires.

I just swapped my wheels over this weekend and I had to sell my old E70 winter wheels which were 19 inch. You will need 20 inch wheels on the X5M as there is just about enough clearance on the front brake calipers with 20 inch, 19 wouldn't fit.

I bought a set of BMW 551 20 inch individual wheels second hand on ebay, refurbished them in grey and then put Yokohama staggered setup of 275 on the front and 315 on the rears. Looks good and different.

My dilemma that I have at the moment is that my summer setup is the 611 20 inch and I have 3.7mm of front tread depth, and having looked at the tyres off the car this weekend this may explain why the car is a bit nervous in the wet. I think I need to change but can only get Pirelli's again in this size or Continental SP6.

18" wheels will not fit your F85. Don't get those.

You need to go back to the dealer and ask for the correct set of winter set that can be mount.

Canadian variants do not come with TPMS. Our cars dont show numbers on the idrive screen and will only show "okay", but they do come with rcdi

Personally, if you're going to drive through much snow I'd recommend a square set-up (same sizes at all 4 corners) and a narrower-than-stock tire - something in the 255-265 neighborhood. The stock sizes will "float" too much in soft snow, and will make the vehicle hard to manage in conditions when there are big ridges of slush or packed snow on the road. Narrower tires will push through heavy slush easier without yanking the steering wheel out of your hands or pitching the vehicle sideways, and will dig and grip better in fresh loose snow.

The only winter conditions where the stock tire sizes will be marginally adequate is on hard-packed snow - so if that's your predominant condition then stock sizes will be okay, though still not nearly as effective as a real winter tire.

My $.02, having driven 40 years in the upper Midwest of the US.
