Strange Object Under my Front Plate

I just noticed this device underneath my front plate yesterday when I was detailing my new to me X5.

Does anyone know what it is? It doesn't look like a BMW part.

Radar detector most likely. Look at the link below. There is a part that looks very similar.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F253868806223

Do you have anything else inside the car?

go find the CPU (small rectangular box) it will have the power connections and the switch
to choose from:

3 User-Selectable Transmit Modes

Constant Transmit: The Defuser g5 will continuously transmit a jamming signal for
the duration of the laser encounter.

Pulse Transmit: The Defuser g5 will transmit a jamming signal for 10 seconds, giving
the driver time to reduce speed. The system will then shut off for 30 seconds, allowing
the officer to obtain a slower speed reading and eliminate the suspicion of "jamming."

Receive Only: For notification only. No jamming signal will be emitted.

btw, I've never had anything like this... I just love Google

hmmmm...laser jammer, someone likes to speed and mod, previous owner may be a forum member. Pose the question and maybe you may find the previous owner who can fill you in on the goodies. There should be some display/lights on the interior to notify you; look above the speedo and tach to see if there are some LEDs or the left and right side outside of the iDrive display. When its super good, notification gets integrated into blinker arrow on the display and they light up blue instead of normal green. Also there should be some keypad to adjust/turn on-off things somewhere in cockpit. Also look for wiring under the hood.

That’s what I thought; to look around for other “parts” that are not OEM but are configured as part of the jammer. And to see where any connecting wires under the hood might lead you.

Seems kind of stupid someone would put that behind the license plate seeing it requires line of sight to work.

Can it penetrate plastic? Tag holder is plastic and previous owner may've been sporting one of those mall-kiosk plastic plates.

I can't blame the user for wanting to hide it behind something. It's butt ugly.

Yeah I can see how the module would actually be under rather than behind. I don't have one but I imagine the plate holder doesn't extend that far down.

I was thrown off a little by the OP not seeing it until the tag holder was removed. But I imagine it'd be pretty hidden tucked in that low.

OK, I had a good look around for the controller, couldn't find a thing. But I did find a speaker under the drivers side dash, near the OBD port. Looks just like the one in the eBay auction. Also found two holes on either side of the dash, which someone here posted are to alert the driver.

I cannot tell if the system is complete or not. I am not really prepared to remove panels to trace wires and look for the control box at this time.

I will be watching the lights on both sides of the cluster to see if they ever light up.

Right side of the cluster.

The left side

Is that K40 in the center of the speaker?
There’s your answer.

It is, but it looks like the previous owner removed some components.

K40 Radar/Laser System

I own a very similar system on my car, that is equipped with the K40 rl360di Radar system, as well as the K40 G5 Laser Defuser System. This is all controlled by a remote control: https://k40.com/wp-content/uploads/2...-1500x1095.jpg .
It appears the seller did not include the remote because he probably didn't want you to think he was a speeder etc. There is a front and rear radar sensor which is usually mounted on top of the crash bar but behind the bumper cover so it's invisible from the outside. However, since laser jammers must have a direct line of sight, it's put on the outside of the bumper cover. I have a few extra remotes and would be willing to sell you one as this is all a $2500+ system and is basically useless without the remote. Let me know if you're interested!

Additionally, I'd like to talk with you about your use and location of these systems as in some cases, it can be very illegal and get you in deep trouble.

The laser sensor and emitter are compact. Small holes could be drilled in the frame to allow the light ingress/egress. That would be very stealth.
