USB power turning on and off
All,
I have a 2016 X5M that I picked up just over a month ago. I have noticed that my iphone charges very, very slowly. When I actually looked at the battery bar, the lightning bolt indicating charging was turning on and off every second or so. Changed cords and the same thing. So I must be getting intermittent or low power to the USB? Anyone else experience this? Is there a DIY fix or am I going to the dealer? |

BMW fixed this issue in 2017 and some late 2016 models. Only way to test this is to plug an iphone into the USB, if it constantly beeps, then it has the old design and BMW won't do anything about it on it's own.
It's not the cable. The old idrive didn't put out enough amperage though the USB port. However, if your idrive crashes randomly (known issue for 14 and 15 models) and still under warranty, with a good SA or shop foreman on your side, BMW will replace idrive with newer design which also solved the USB issue. My replacement unit works flawlessly now, no more idrive crash or USB port issues. |

Had same issue on my 2015 X5. Bought one of these based on feedback on this forum and it has worked 100% ever since:

And there's always the choice of a USB charger that can be plugged into one of your 12v sockets:

Thanks for input. I will try a shorter cable.
My kids use the USB for playing music. I don't really want multiple cords. Silly that this is even an issue that the dealer/bmw wouldn't fix. |

Real problem is...
My main concern is how do I do software updates. My phone does the same thing, also when I insert a USB drive to update my software (original 2014 version) it doesn't recognize anything being in the drive. If I ever get a software update done then I worry about a map update.
So to update software with this USB problem I ......?

Just adding my voice here. I did an NBT retrofit on my F12 650i. Had endless issues with my iPod that I use for Spotify. Would keep doing the charging-not charging thing, often times it wouldn't connect to iDrive and there was also an error code logged in ISTA for USB Hub overload (or similar). Was going to pull the the USB and replace it but decided to try a new USB cable first. Solved my problem.
iPod is always charging when the car is on, Spotify works every time, no more random disconnects either.
