Ridge Grappler- tire dilemma

i live in CT. seldom drive up north in snow. i do snowboard so i go up there a decent amount. have 19's on x5 X package with the all seasons. car is pretty bad in snow to be honest.

i am debating getting a snow tire package, dont really feel like storing and dealing with 2 sets of tires.

i saw a range rover with ridge grappler's on them- car looked AMAZING. i would like to go for this look on the X5. what are your thoughts? anyone ever run an aggressive tire like this? i would much prefer this all year ( do about 15k miles per year) instead of dealing with a snow package

An aggressive mud tire doesn't mean it will do well on snow.
What tires do you have now?

Get snow tires, mud tires look mean but they are worse in the snow than just about every other option (summer, all season, etc.) Living in Colorado, I drive in the snow quite often and I cannot count the number of times I see Jeeps or full-size trucks stuck with their big meaty off-road tires. Call a tire place in a snowy area and ask this question, they are likely to laugh you off the phone. I run Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3's through the winter and they are world class in the snow, on ice, and are reasonably quiet on dry. Look them up and do it right the first time.

Nokia, Michelin, and a few other make a 4 season tire which bridges the gap between all-seasons which are really only 3 seasons and winter tires which come with the hassles of a one season tire (change-overs, storage, etc, twice a year).

Some examples include:

- Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady
- Michelin CrossClimate +
- Nokian WRG4
- Toyo Celsius
- Vredestein Quatrac 5

This newer class of tires come with the 3 mountain peak + snowflake symbols which denote them as being winter capable tires. However, they wear much better than winter tires and are designed to be driven on year round. You should be able to find something in 19" if you look around at retailers who sell them.

This would be a much better option for you than the ones you were first interested in.

Costco will do a winter swap for $50. Then you can just have one set of wheels.

And where there's snow there's almost always ice. An aggressive mud tire with a summer compound and a high void ratio will suck donkey cojones on ice.

bf goodrich all terrains are pretty highly rated for snow. i had them on tahoe and they were great. they make a more performance SUV version with a lower profile ... check them out. i ended up getting snow tires
