Go and see a doctor immediately for your well founded severe emotional distress, start having problems sleeping, get prescriptions, visit the hospital and make sure you get a lawyer so you don't accept some pitiful settlement offer like a new lease and or new car lol. My 05 4.8is had a heated seat malfunction while I was in college and it burnt a hole right through the leather and burnt me and I almost flew off the road. Had I taken one of my legal classes prior to that incident I would have had a new BMW every year for life

First to the op. Glad to hear you survived. Your description alone sounds scary.

Second to all the armchair quarterbacks out there that doubt the door lock issue. I believe it. Why? My own x3 has an intermittent issue where the drivers door handle will not unlock the door no matter how many times I pull the handle. I'm pretty sure it's an electronic malfunction of some kind. If I press the center control panel all lock and unlock button then the drivers door handle will work again. The problem is intermittent (Maybee once every two weeks) which makes me believe it's not a mechanical issue.

To the op be safe and hope you have a full recovery.

For everyone who is trolling him. Wait till you are in a near death situation. Have compassion. World is full of trolls this past year

I'm assuming you were in the drivers seat. Why could you not pull the door handle twice to get out? It's a mechanical lever that pops the lock and not electrical.

In your moment of panic did you forget the obvious and not try the handle?

Maybe in this situation, the electrical system was damaged by the fire and got out of wack, thinking it is armed.
This. For everyone mentioning double pull to open the door try this.
Sit inside the car and have the car locked by remote, there is no way to unlock by pulling the handle bar.
For everyone's information: Use the center lock/unlock button on the consul to unlock first to be able to get out

In this case that may have had problem functioning due to fire.

No. All cars DON'T go up in flames. It is like saying all airplanes fall one day. This is a serious issue.

It anit easy to break a window, I've hit it-with an axe multiple times still no break, think of it as plywood, best tool is a spring loaded punch. The front we saw out

Car stock. Just last week my dealership installed a Dinnan exhaust. Other then that completely stock. Never have touched my car. All dealership work. Was just in last week for second service.
I am wondering if the dealership that installed the Dinan exhaust touched the battery at all for the install. For the X5 there are two batteries in the trunk under the floor. If they did touch the batteries I'm wondering if they didn't tighten it enough or something was left in there that could have sparked up.

Wow, if the door can't be opened without a battery, that seems like a DOT fail to me. Even a corvette with electrically activated latches has a mechanical override.

My ASD wasn't unplugged. It was all in tact. No need to worry about that Gents. What they did say is that they think it started near the battery area.. not sure about that..

I do have to give props to my local dealer.. They are giving me a 100% refund for original purchase of the car plus any extras i bought... If i wanted a BMW again they have my loyalty however Im no longer driving a BMW.

Looking at the 2017 GLE 63 AMG S or the 2017 Porsche Cayenne Turbo...
Can't say I blame you at all. But good on your dealer for that. It's the right thing.

wow so glad this guy is fine. and his family wasnt in the car at the time.

For people saying all car do this bla bla bla, cut him some slack. The guy feared for his life...wouldnt you???? you all might have some sort of small panic at least. This is a very traumatic experience and it doesnt matter how much you love a brand, you might not feel the same anymore. Whatever car he chooses, i hope it makes him feel safer to drive his family around.

All my cars will have the hammer. Yeah the double pull didn't work for me. It was terrifying. I am lucky my family and dog weren't in the car. Totally spooked.

He tried pulling the door handle twice... Scary!

Glad you're going to recover.

Maybe it's time to invest in one of those "life hammer" window shattering tools.
At least you should be able to get breathable air into the cabin if the doors won't open.

Glad you ok!
Future note for anyone if you don't have the tool to break the windshield, this might help.
If you headrest can come off use the metal ends to try to escape. I heard it word and some it didn't. At least it is an effort.

Glad you safe OP.

If you have any common sense you would understand that the plastic lights would have been fully melted beyond recognition long before the bumper would have if the fire originated from there.

Wow glad your okay thats some scary shit. I once got trapped inside an older 7 series i think it was a 1996. I was driving it and the battery just died the doors were locked at the time and it went into lockdown mode as the tech from BMW said to me on the phone. I had my dad try a jumper box under the hood and the car would not open. It was extremely hot that day, I somehow managed to get through the ski pass through with one arm and get into the tool kit, get the sunroof emergency wrench and crawl out via the sunroof. I was in a panic and the car wasn't even on fire. Couldn't even imagine if it was, I agree with the other poster, pistol to top of windshield towards the sky and break it that way if no glass breaker is available.
