Just south, closer to the airport in the Cliffs at Walnut Cove. Have toyed with the idea of a condo but went with the lot as we enjoy the outdoors and the mountain views. Got it pretty cheap a few years ago when the real estate market in the area was still depressed. Prices have moved up nicely now so who knows, might sell and swing back to the condo idea. But as I tell my wife, who knows where the world will be in 3-4 years!

Edit: I looked up Wilma, which was the worst impact on us where we live, and it was also late October. So yes, into late October, not early October.

On their roofs and the FD couldn't get to them because of downed power lines in the water. 5 blocks away people died. A wave literally overtook the house and pulled out a couple and their daughter. The father and daughter died, mother survived. The aftermath was surreal. I was only out of power for a few days, no property damage but within walking distance the devastation was unbelievable. And that was a quick storm, she blew in and out. People - please leave..... If you stay and need help, they may not be able to get to you. It's not worth it. tropicaltidbits.com both are excellent resources. Living in FL, I check both every day (along with NHC) during hurricane season. If you are in an evacuation zone, get the heck out of dodge. A CAT 4 hurricane can and will kill you. Thoughts go out to everyone in its path. |

Unfortunately, this looks even worse this a.m. Obviously a major coastal impact expected but also looking more and more like high risk of flooding far inland in places prone to flooding, with rivers, not used to major rain, etc. Hopefully things don’t turn out as bad as they look right now, everyone near the coast has evacuated and everyone in its path is finalizing preparations now.

Of course. Technically, they are still on long island. Just a different county....

We're just happy it isn't heading further north. We've already had record amounts of rain in my area this year. The ground feels like a saturated sponge.

One suggestion for those in the path inland (anyone on coast should have already evacuated) who might be at risk of losing power: get some ziplock gallon and quart freezer bags, fill about 2/3 full with water, zip shut and put in freezer today. You will get blocks of ice that last longer than ice cubes. Surely they won't last days, but is something easy to do with low cost / effort.
