Handling after wheel upgrade
Hello gents,
So last week I changed wheels from my standart 18'' wheels to below setup: Rear = 315/35R20 Front = 275/40R20 Sitting on ContiSportContact 5 tires. I am well aware that the ride would change and become more sporty and noisy. But I have one issue that I would like your expertise on. Driving on the highway - especially when changing lanes from the middle lane to either the out- or inside lane - I from time to time experience that the car is "stuck" in the deep tracks created by the trucks. From time to time a quite frightening experience. Is that common with wider/bigger tires? Do you have the same experience? On a note - it was my dealership that changed the tires and they also balanced the wheels and adjusted the cambers. Thanks in advance. |

Happened to me when I bought the car then moved from TX-AK. I actually took mine in for an alignment thinking it was off. Alignment was off and it helped with that handling issue a fair bit. Grooves up here in anchorage are substantial due to studded tires in the winter, so its to be expected that you have to drive a little more aware.
Worst part about it, is that its a sudden jerk of the steering wheel or sticking like you stated. |

Perfectly normal. Those very large tires, especially in the rear, get stuck in the rut that trucks are leaving on the asphalt. When they pop out, you need to have both hands on the wheel!

Unrelated to the exact question but what cold tire pressures are you keeping in the front/ back with the 20" wheels?

Tire pressure and alignment may cause it.
Have those 2 checked.

runflat tires exaggerate this issue.
i am running non runflat dws06 continentals in the same sizes you're running, and i hardly notice the "rut tracking". |

Makes sense, as tire sidewall stiffness plays a role in how tire adapts to road rut tracks. Obviously non run flat tire can accommodate road imperfections better, while run flat will tend to follow rut tracks due to it's stiffer sidewalls - it behaves like a railroad cart. I also have dws 06 275/315 and I can't feel any rut tracking

It's called Tramlining..
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiret....jsp?techid=47 My X5 has a bad case of it. I have adaptive suspension, if you put it sport mode it helps a lot. Tire size 285/35/21 and 325/30/21
