Just did this also. As easy as described in previous posts. Couple of comments from me:

- Head torch is really handy else pretty hard to see what you are doing
- I didn't have a fan in mine behind the vent (cost cutting or just unnecessary?)
- I wrapped the cables in some packing foam before installing the cover to avoid annoying rattles

- In Australia, the plastic part costs AUD$60 (yikes!) and is a special order from BMW (was faster than online but heaps more $$)

I removed mine this morning as well. Same comments as everyone else, took me about 20 mins and a couple of scrapes due to my big hands lol.
Disconnecting the wires was the toughest part. I also added foam packing wrap on the big black fan connector to prevent plastic rattling sounds but not sure it really makes any difference...figured since it was open tho...

Thanks so much for everyone's input and help, from the original instructions, to the detailed disconnections instructions, and the dude who said to do it from the back seat...you guys freakin' rock!

Thanks.

Apologies for noob question, but is there any way we can retain a wire connection or socket to that external antenna to iPhone? I'm on Sprint and it often drops down to 1-2 line bars connection wise. i would imagine external roof antenna on x5 should boost signal no?

You will need the phone to be docked to the cradle in order to use the external antenna.

Removed mine the other day from my F85; I had previously done this with my E71 so familiar with the process. Was easy to tackle from the passenger seat. Of note I was missing a fan too. Found this tray on Amazon that I'm testing out. Although, I am not happy with the logo, it is nice to have two tiers in the center console.

I just purchased a 2016 F15 and have an iphoneX. At the dealership they told me they do not make an adapter for the X yet, is that true? If it doesn't have any use, then I was going to use it. Has anyone had any negatives in removing it? Has anyone had the dealer do it?

I almost considered having a dealer do it (thank gawd I didn't). I called 5 dealers and 2 of them said they don't provide that service. The other 3 told me it's about 2-3 hours and I would be looking at $300-$350.

I ended up doing it myself in 20 mins and cost me like $40 or something for the replacement cover.

If you're at least a little bit handy and can get a hold of a 25 or 30 torx driver and a small flat-head screwdriver (precision), I'm sure you can do it.

There's no iPhone X specific adapter, but there's universal one with a lightning connector, which works great with an iPhone X. P/n 84 21 2 365 786.

P.S. Are you Cedric Paquette by any chance?...

Why would you use a cable snap in adapter when there is a snap in wireless charger??

Because ConnectedDrive works only via cable on NBT.

Do it yourself, with everyone's step-by-step instructions and photos even a not handy person could tackle this.

Thanks for the help, and part number, I am going to check it out. No I'm not Ceddy, just another hockey player in Tampa with the #13. My serious days are over now.

I installed the Snap-In Wireless Charger, but I think the maximum size it can fit is a iPhone X, anything larger than it, it may not fit.

Please attach picture on which air grill that you are trying to remove?

remember that there is an additional screw UNDER the charging cradle itself (total of 4 screws) -- if you don't take that one out you physically won't be able to remove the cradle without seriously breaking it or causing damage to the storage box.

I'm intending to do exactly what you did if I can't find a wireless charger I could install in that phone doc. I see the phone doc as worthless since you're connecting via bluetooth anyway. I love the idea of the organizational tray, but I don't necessarily NEED it, that is, IF I can get a wireless charger to swap into that snap-in tray. I'm at this moment thinking I value wireless charging more than I do a nicer organizational tray, but we'll see.

In any case, well done, and thanks to Ben r33_RGSport for this thread and instructions.

I found it more valuable to just take the cradle out. Wireless charging is nice, but I don't think worth it. Big draw back is that the phone is in the center console and you can't see it. I think a lot of people change their phones frequently, and that's why the phone cradle is useless as well as wireless charging cradle; someone posted a charging cradle that was only good for the iPhone X but nothing bigger. Now if you can get a wireless charging mat like they are including in more new cars, then you are on to something as it is more universal for different size phones. Another negative for wireless charging for me is that my phone is always in a case to protect it; I care more about the screen than a wireless charge. It isn't that hard to plug it in.

Yeah that's all fair, though I use a very low profile case because I really hate bulky ones, so wireless charging still works for me. I also just hate plugging the phone in all the time, I don't know what it is, I have an aversion to it now.

I'm still torn about this. But I do really love the organizing tray and actually bought it, it's sitting at home. So I'm ready to install it if I decide to pull out the phone cradle thing.
