Going from 114 to 120mph is a lot of additional power, probably about another 100 to 150 awhp assuming no weight reduction and reasonable DAs.

As for higher rpms, doesn't do much good on stock turbos as the boost falls on its face after 6200rpm. Higher shift points are huge for the aftermarket turbo guys but not as much for us stockers.
Got it! Yeah man, it seems crazy how much power we need to get additional 6 mph! I was just dreaming
Well, I'll try to at least reach maybe 115-116mph - maybe that will be enough to get to 11.99s lol? I hope it's doable if stars align perfectly and if I hit perfect shifting points.
I wish I could have time to sit down and calculate exact shift points to maximize acceleration based on gear ratios and torque curve (like that dude in video), but I'm not that hardcore lol. Just doing this for fun.

P.S. I did it in Comfort mode with DSC off and gear shifter in S mode (to the left) with manual shifting. So I'm thinking to try Sport mode next time - but in that mode DSC gets activated again - so I'm not sure how it will play out. We'll see.

I would say to shift lower rather than higher. As pits200 said, boost starts to fall on its face in the higher RPMs. I have not gotten any 1/4mi times doing manual shifting, but I drive around town in manual all the time. It's so much more fun to have the RPMs where you want them before you stomp the gas. What I noticed, though, was that there is a sharp decrease in acceleration (butt dyno feel) above 6k RPM. I aim to shift when I see the needle at 5500. By the time you react and the transmission actually shifts, you will be at or above 6000. In the lower gears at least. That damn tach needle moves when it's in boost lol.
Thanks man! Yeah, I'm going to try shift earlier!
I don't know why manual shifting was a bit faster? I mean does ZF8 transmission really changes gears faster in manual mode or it's just that maybe it just has one less algorithm - like one less thing to compute and worry about (since driver decides when to shift) and maybe that's why it shifts a tiny bit faster? Not really sure.

It definitely shifts faster on Sport mode (shifter to the left). So, even if your manually shifting, I would make sure the transmission is in Sport mode.

Could be! I saw above you stated you were in Comfort mode with DSC off. From what I've tested, DSC off is actually putting the car into sport settings. I confirmed this by going into IDrive Menu > Settings > Drive Mode > Check the 'Drive Mode Info' checkbox. With this setting active, you will see the screen activate after holding the DSC button to deactivate. It should show the steering wheel, engine, transmission and suspension highlighted in red. I think the main reason it feels like Comfort mode is the throttle response remains in Comfort. I've read in other BMW forums this is intended to give increased throttle control since the nannies are off. Additionally, press DSC again to reactivate and your screen will clearly show it switching back into true Comfort settings.

So at this point I almost always drive with DSC off and shifter to the left. Often manually shifting as well. Sport+ was fun when it was stock, but tuned there's too much power and the traction control tries to intervene too much if you're trying to have any fun.

Shift points are a tricky thing, it's not solely when boost and power falls off. But there's the aspect of torque multiplier in a lower gear vs.short shifting to the next gear because it keeps you in a better boost range. To be honest, in a 1/4 mile shift points aren't going to get you more than 1 mph. The biggest factor in quarter mile is if you can finish it at a high rpm lower gear or if you're forced to shift to the next gear close to the finish line.

I haven't looked at the gear ratios to know what gear the car is in and what rpm at 110 to 117mph

Ah, I see! Thanks for that info - I'm learning something new everyday!

So it turns out starting from 2015 x5 BMW changed gear ratios on ZF8 transmission. 2015+ has 4.7sec 0-60mph vs 2014 4.9s 0-60mph (BMW numbers that are known to be underestimated historically). But we can see that 2015+ has shorter gears, especially first and second and maybe that accounts for 0.2s faster reported 0-60mph time?

2015 and up now has:
5.00 (can't find max theoretical speed in each gear)
3.20
2.14
1.72
1.31
1.00
0.82
0.64

3.47 (Rear)
3.15 (Final drive ratio)

While 2014 has:
4.70 - 40mph (max theoretical speed in each gear)
3.14 - 61mph
2.11 - 91mph
1.67 - 115mph
1.29 - 149mph
1.00 - 192mph
0.84 - 229mph
0.67 - 288mph

3.32 (Rear)
3.15 (Final drive ratio)

So gear IV ends at 115mph (top theoretical speed for that gear) and may become issue when trying to finish 1/4 mile strong without shifting. Especially since practical top speed in each gear may be a bit lower due to different losses. Just thinking aloud.

Also, I believe all F15 X5 50i’s have the ZF 8HP75 transmission with the above mentioned gear ratios, according to realoem.com.

My understanding is that there was a software update issued to all x5's in 2015 to have better acceleration. Including the 2014's. I'm trying to remember where I got the info.

Im actually going to see which software version I have and call my dealer on Monday to see if it's the most up to date version

Thanks guys! Yes, it would be interesting to know if it was not gear ratios that changed, but software update.

Wow this thread got pushed back to page 3! Does anyone know how to get threads stickied? We have multiple really good DIYs as well as this thread that deserve a sticky at this point. I've tried messaging admins with no reply.

I made it out to the track one last time for the summer. The track was really busy and I only got 2 runs in. This was my first run. I don't have slip for the second, I waited in line 2+ hours to run and just wanted to gtfo after

I am running a splash of E85. About 1gal added to 1/2 tank of 93. Weather was also a factor since the temp was about 58F. Especially when compared to previous runs of 80+ weather. Either way, I couldn't be happier with these numbers!

11.87 @ 116mph!!!

Apparently I've been to this track enough times that the guy standing to the right knew I would win. Notice him pointing at my lane

WOW, phenomenal work breaking into the 11's. Looks like the tune loves cooler temperatures. You are not that much slower than a Trackhawk and faster that stock X5Ms. Very nice!

bm3 Stage 1, 93 octane with a little e85 added per the tuner.

The only hardware modification is the X5M Air Filters. This thing's a beast!!

Silly question...

It seems like some people go with Alpina turbos for N63TU with their f10 5er. Would those turbos work on X5? Isn't the engine the same across all platforms? 5, 6, 7, X5, x6? Would alpina be better than doing hybrid?

Most of the talk here is around BM3. Does anyone have experience with JB4 performance vs BM3? I like the idea of being able to take the JB4 off so the dealer can't tell.

JB4 leaves ghost codes and tricks the car (more warranty concerns and issues) than a proper remap (software flash like BM3) which has over 9k users, being able to flash back to stock and lock ecu for maintenance.

In my opinion you will be happier, save money, have resale value or can transfer to your next car, have the best customer service, FREE updates, free datalogging, able to switch maps via Android, iPhone or MacBook/Windows no wires in engine bay no splicing or hard to reach areas for extra power etc.

PS. Just look at Doberman16 1/4 mile video and slip on a STG1
Save the hassle, I've had both been there done that!

I read on an early post on this thread that some people reported that they went into the dealership and had their warranty voided after flashing back to stock with BM3. Has that been fixed?

I have JB4 on my F30 and have never had an issue at any dealership and I don't even take it off.
