Transmission humming noise

I have a 2014 50i, and it started making a humming / whining noise, it’s especially audible when slowing down and it downshifts. I’ve also noticed that when coasting, it slightly jerks.

What could it be? The car has 46k miles, so warranty is gone soon. I have it scheduled for a service appointment in 3 weeks, so not too much time for the usual runaround with the dealer - would be good to suggest a possible cause.

Thanks!

Did you check for any stored faults using ISTA/D or Carly?

Yes, nothing out of the ordinary or even related to transmission.

To my surprise, I just found out that warranty ran out in May. I guess it’s time to start paying for service and parts.

If its a major repair, the dealer might be able to get a goodwill repair (depends on your relationship with the dealer). Btw, since WA is one of the CARB states, the tranny or some parts of it might be covered under 7/70 CA emissions warranty.

IMO, I wouldn’t own a 50i without an extended warranty of some kind.

Noise could be something completely different. Get a second opinion.

Looking for a 3rd party warranty now.

I have an appointment with BMW Seattle on October 12 to do an oil change and look into this humming issue. Will update the thread once I know more.

I had humming noise due to worn out drive shaft on an old Cayenne during slowdown and downshift.

Most likely the transfer case. SA told me that it is very common problem on 50i and they have never seen transmission to fail. I replaced transfer case on my 2014 50i at 48K miles under cpo then output shaft because of jerking under aceleration. Let us know.
