The funny thing is that the confusion may lie internally because all true ///M cars get an S in their vin... eg: WBSXXXXXXXXX. The only cars that I know of that did not get this S designation are the original 850ci, X5M/X6M, and X3M/X4M.

I know that F85s start with 5YMK and that is because they are manufactured in the US and the first part of a VIN is country of manufacture from what I've been told.

Correctomundo. Which is why internally there may have been some confusion because the VIN is typically WBSXXXXXXXXX. I am not justifying their response or not honoring the promotion simply playing devil's advocate and trying to understand where they may have had some confusion.

Yes, there could possibly be some confusion, but the problem is that it should not take a frustrated and persistent client to address the issue.

It's concerning that no one at BMW NA did anything about this when I'm sure they were aware of it. Same goes for BMWCCA rebate program folks. You're telling me none of these folks knew that these cars are truly M models?

Response I got from BMWCCA was that "it's been this way for 10+ years now".

The icing on the cake is the responses I would get from BMW NA reps being stubborn about this - thankfully they put it in an e-mail because no one would have believed me. When I refused to accept that as an answer and asked the representative to escalate this, her response was "there's no one else to escalate it to above me". It was all very poorly handled to the clients expense (lots of wasted time).

Now they need to go back to those "10+ years" of incorrectly issued refunds and send out the proper amounts to all the owners.

I understand and I agree. Fortunately it was resolved; if only in your case. At this point anyone and everyone who was only issued $250 but eligible for $500 should contact BMW/NA.

On everything a parts manager in BMW Mamaroneck gave me that exact reasoning last Februar. It doesn't make any sense.

Looks like an ///M
Fast like an ///M

Its an ///M BMWUSA.

Kief - That is great.

Glad I saw the original post this morning and within 2-3 hours it was able to get corrected. That shows the power of organizations such as M Gruppe and forums like this.

For those ///M owners out there that currently aren't members of M Gruppe (there is no cost to join) please use this link: https://www.mgruppe.org/ to join today.

There you hit the nail on the crux of the matter! Some unscrupulous people at BMW are making a lot of money using this scheme.

SNAGuy, thanks for the info, I just joined as well. FWIW, my experience with BMW NA has been very inconsistent. A couple of really poor experiences that required a lot of follow up and dealing with people that were stubborn or not knowledgeable. Then last year I had a great experience when I got reimbursed for two months of lease payments during the time that my car was in their shop waiting for a part to come from Germany. All it says that we shouldn't take no for an answer and utilize the power of groups' like this or Mgruppe to get results.

Can I ask for more info about this rebate? I just bought my X5M from the dealer last week and didn’t hear anything from them about a rebate.

If you're a member of BMW CCA, or of MGruppe linked above, there are rebates available. The one in question is for BMW CCA, so if you were a member when you purchased, you're probably still eligible to claim.

A couple of counterpoints in the argument that only the M2, M3 and M4 are true M cars

The M2 has an tuned N55 motor. The M2 Comp has a detuned S55.

Looking back, do they consider the 1M not an M since the M is not in front of the numerical series designation?

Considering the price difference between the X5M and the X5 5.0 with a M Sport package, that alone should qualify it as a true M.

I guess from a technical perspective, the things that made an M Car and M Car were the following:
1. RWD
2. Super Tight Handling
3. Manual Transmission

Times change though. The M5 has an automatic and AWD. Will they now say that it's not an M Car, it's touched by M?

If so, I have only one respose; TOUCH THIS!

Correct but it's growing.

I know there was a local event a few months ago (which I couldn't attend) but nothing since.

Hopefully soon something else will be planned.

If you are on Facebook, make sure you are added to the Facebook group too.

There is a wealth of info sharing there on a daily basis.

Clearly the work of some gutless shrews hiding behind the anonymity and lack of accountability that's built into the modern online business model. What a bunch of weenies.

Back in the good old days when we did business face-to-face, if you treated a customer like sh!t you ran the risk that he'd hop over the counter and snug your necktie up nice and tight for you, and maybe offer you some "suggestions" for how to improve yourself. This resulted in consistently better service.
