Winter set up

Hello,

I need to get a winter set up for my X5 50i. I live in Denver and play in the mountains a lot in the winter. I have a set of 467m 19” wheels that I need some recommendations on winter tires. The hope is in the summer I will get a set of 469 20” with summer tires. I have a rare spare tire kit in the back so I don’t necessarily need run flats in the winter. Any advice is appreciated.

I run the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3's (style 467 @ 19"s) in the winter here in Denver (sold at Discount Tire), heading into the mountains often chasing the snow and they are rock solid in the deepest of snow, icy roads and still quiet on dry roads. The wear has proven to be better than the Blizzaks and I was able to find them on sale. Really happy with these in the winter compared to the Conti's, Pirelli's and Michelin options which I have tried over the years.

+1

I've run just about every kind of winter tire in my 40 years of driving in Minnesota and around the upper Midwest. The Hakkas are by far the best. I'm running the identical setup as Rydogg21 .

A couple of years ago I did a 110-mile drive on the north shore of Lake Superior in January. It had snowed about 3" overnight. The roads were a mix of packed and loose snow and it was about 12 above Fahrenheit. All 2-lane roads with little or no shoulder and plenty of hills and twists, in a really remote area. The nav system said the drive would take 2 hours and 33 minutes. I did it in 1 hour and 52 minutes. I pushed it a little, of course, but was never 10/10ths or even 9/10ths.

That's what it's like to have confidence in your setup. Nothing like it.

Another Denver, Nokian R3 user here as well. Running 285/35/21s all around on OEM 612M wheels and very pleased with the setup.

What type of tread life are you getting out of the Nokian tires?

I've got about 15-16K miles on mine and the 8mm wear indicator just disappeared. Meaning they're about 40-50% worn. Not bad for a hard-core winter tire.

Any thoughts on a good all season that performs well in the snow. It sounds like the life of a tru winter tire is short. The hard part with Denver is we can have a foot of snow and it’s gone in the next two days. A decent part of winter is dry rads and I will probably put on 10k miles this season.

There aren't any. All season tires don't perform optimally in any season. They're all made from too hard of a compound to grip well in cold weather, even in the dry. And they have too low of a void ratio to clear snow well at low speeds.

Independent tests have been done where a FWD car with winter tires accelerated and braked better on packed snow than an AWD car with all-seasons. That's how much difference there is, in some cases.

If you run the numbers, our cars depreciate $50 a day. Every day, whether you're driving it or not. That's not counting any operating expenses. Winter tires will run you about $1200 mounted and balanced, and they'll last you at least 3 years. That's about $1 a day. That's a 2% additional expenditure.

If you wanted a mediocre driving experience at minimal cost, you bought the wrong car.

I had the same delima until I found these NOKIAN WRG3 ALL-WEATHER TIRES https://www.ebay.com/itm/4-New-Nokia...IAAOSwljJdKPIy I live in New England and we have all kinds of weather conditions here and Nokain's fit these condition perfectly, I have for year now and they handle as good as winter tires in the snow ( drove through some snow mobile trails up in Vermont last year with these did not have any issues at all) while not being to soft to run them in the summer as well, that is why they called ALL-Weather tires not ALL-Season big difference between then two. Highly recommend these, priced good as well at $220 a tire.

I also run Hakkas. I got run flats. Winter limits performance driving anyhow and I never want to change a tire in the snow again. Duke

Good point. I’m early in the process of owning a BMW. I got a great deal on the CPO in March and everything else adds up quick. I do want the best possible performance, that’s why I got the 50i, well shy of a M.

I order Hak 9 for SUV from local Discount tires, will see how they perform this winter.
I have Dunlop Sport 3D prior, and no complains there

You can run studded tires where you live? Or maybe you just mount the tires and roll the dice...? Not many places in the US where you can run studs.

Just picked these up. Replica wheels with Nitto winter tires. All in $2800 Canadian. That includes all of our outrageous taxes.

I am not planning to have these tires studded, they are studdable though.

I did not get a price breakdown. But the shop sells a ton of X5 replica wheel packages as all M sports here need winter wheels. But Kal tire price was $4000 for the exact same setup

possibly theses guys? https://www.soratwheels.ca/index.php/#/ they sell quite a lot of winter wheel packages in the LML. personally i would source a used set of oem wheels off CL and get tires separately, just so you dont have to question the quality of replica wheels. i bought a set of 18" oem rims ($500) off CL + new hankook tires ($1000) a few years back.

It was at Ikon Customs. I’m sure for winters they will be fine. Langley BMW winter wheel package was $7200. I’m sure they will be just as good as those steel black wheels for $30 everyone rolls on in LM. Thanks. I looked at CL. But wanted 20” and people were on the Hasting st crack wanting huge money for used

I already have 20" tires, just looking to get rims to make summer set, I also keep looking at Craigslist for something interesting but used
