Summer is coming, temperature is raising and the noise is back. Clearly heard it yesterday, maybe even louder than it used to be last year.
Besides of that, it's been 20k since I noticed that ticking noise. So far so good the engine runs great. But this noise... Damn, it makes you crazy! P.S. What's strange, I did not hear it in winter at all. And now it's clearly audible. So I really wonder what could it be. :/ Last edited by Bomzara; 05-14-2022 at 04:36 AM.. |

It's your waste gate… "waste gate rattle" … welcome to the club. Sorry but no fix with stock turbo. I just apply a little more throttle and it goes away… I have learned to drive like this due to the embarrassment of have a 80k BMW that sounds like shit between 2-3k rpm

Hi All,
Same noise here with my X5 35i 2016, 15Kmiles. The noise comes on with a warm engine and driving next to a wall or a building. I will send it to a dealer here, hoping he will address it. Best |

Went to a dealer last year with this exact same issue and was told it's a normal operating sound. Ok..
It's gotten worse. Took to a dealer this am and was informed of the technical bulletin. They're performing that right now. I'll update in approx 4-5 hours, but from what I'm reading I'm not hopeful. Is the general concensus that this is the turbo waste gate? |

BMW TSB #310314
https://www.tsbsearch.com/BMW/SI-B31-03-14 Originally posted by LOW4LYF 6 or 7 months ago. Took mine into the dealer, did a ride-along with the noise, and he came back in 10 minutes saying there was a bulletin for this which affected the differential and all it needed was some grease...which is kind of wild, but alright. Did a search for the TSB and found this thread. Thought I'd update that I'm getting the same service, because it looks like only LOW4LYF got it done and there's a lot of chatter about turbos and waste gates and all sorts of stuff. Should note, I sent them a DM asking if the ticking / clicking ever came back and they confirmed that it's still gone. I'm in a 35 Xdrive 2018. I've been researching this for probably close to 9' months now and have been to the dealer twice for it. Once they said they couldn't replicate it then told me it's normal operation, so I gave up there…I've heard everything on the 1/2/3/X forum's from waste gate rattle, faulty turbo, front diff, drive axles. Guys have had entire turbos and waste gates replaced to still have the noise. I have an S drive so front diff is out. The sound we're hearing does not at all sound like the metallic wastegate rattle sound that's all over YouTube at least in my opinion. Plus that's present at all rev ranges.
What's weird to me is it only happens under load driving from about 0-3k rpm up to about 25-30mph. Above that speed and rpm range it's gone. Revving in the driveway with no load it's smooth as silk from every rev range cold or hot. I finally figured out the solution to the problem, I just drive with the windows up. |

Last year I had the car on the lift. A serviceman was revving (transmiision in D) with brake pedal full down, I definitely heard the sound comes from the back-right-bottom side of the engine, where the turbo and catalytic converter are. Combining that with the fact that the noise is only present when the engine is hot enough, I'd say it should be any of these two guys. |

A local dealer has informed me that because the engine hood is well-closed then you may hear noises coming from underneath |
