Honest opinion of the F85/86 braking performance?

I'm not long into ownership of my F85 and coming from 4 years in a F82... I really like the car and it suites my current needs hence the change. But, one thing that surprises me is the braking performance. I understand it's a 2200kg car but I just expected better, it also feels wooden to me when you're into the pedal a bit.

Does anyone else feel like the brakes are average on these cars?

I'm going to be looking at a pad change sooner rather than later and not due to dust, I'll take the dust if I get better braking!

Cheers,

Dean

I think it has amazing stopping power for such a heavy vehicle.
I always worry about someone behind me in a panic stop situation because my brakes are better than theirs.

Use factory pads, better initial bite probably equals shorter stops

Have you had your pads and rotors checked and/or properly bedded? Have you panic braked yet?

I hit the throttle hard to pass someone the other day. As soon as I gained some serious momentum, I had to hit the brakes hard because traffic had suddenly stopped not too far ahead. It was almost as if I was on a short track.

My brakes (all newly installed and bedded a couple thousand miles ago) have been good to great for most street driving. And I was wondering the same kind of thing, how they would really perform under high performance driving. I was impressed on this panic braking, gave me a lot of faith in the brakes.

Hopefully doing a track day this year and I'll get to see how they really can perform. I've seen people on here talk about how they're insanely good and don't fade even on the track.

They will fade, once their hot enough. The only brakes that I'm aware that don't fade is carbon ceramic rotors and pads.

Thanks for the replies guys, the fronts are original as I'm aware and the rears were replaced about 5000kms ago so should be well bedded in.

When I test drove it I did some heavy braking (progressive heavy not slamming the brakes) and at one point I thought I wasn't going to stop were I needed to... maybe it's just my expectations, dunno... or, maybe there was/is some glazing from not being applied well by the previous owner.

I've done 3500kms in it since I picked it up, it's got enough for general driving don't get me wrong... I was going to get the excessive squealing sorted by the dealer (it's nuts, my M4 squealed but this is embarrassing) so I'll add it to the mix...

Cheers,

Cheers,
I hear you especially on the squealing...

Bedding is the key, and most people get it wrong. From what I understand, brake bedding should be performed according to the type of driving that you'll be doing. So if you're driving slow, then bed accordingly. But if you're driving fast and/or tracking, bed according to that.

My dealer bedded my brakes, then I did it again a few more times because they were like "go EASY on these brakes for two weeks" as if I'm driving it around town in traffic all the time. I didn't trust them to do it right, so I bedded at a few different speeds including triple. So far very happy with the performance, other than the dust and occasional squeal. (The dust is madness, half hour to clean and polish wheels and the fronts are coated after driving 5 minutes to the gas station...)

I agree with you on stopping power. I almost wrote my truck off in the first 15 minutes of ownership.
I’ve since switched to power stop which hasn’t been much worse bite than oem after bedding in but it has no noise and dust now.

Any of y’all install stainless lines? Any feedback? I came from a Cayenne Turbo S, and the Porsche has a more direct feel. That said the F85 brakes are very good. I sure in a lap or two you would get serious fade, but city or highway they should inspire confidence.

Do some hard stops and see what I mean. It’ll stop good.

For some reason both vehicles have a spongy and hydraulic feel to the pedal. I prefer a very hard pedal. I have noticed if I set the auto h button, let off the brakes, and sit there, pedal firms up NICELY. Cayenne does the same thing! So is probably just how they were designed. Never got around to stainless lines on the cayenne though.

Hope this helps.

Front: Z23-1738
Rear: Z23-919B

Haven't installed mine yet, but have heard the initial bite isn't as aggressive as stock pads.

I had a memorial service for a relative that passed during the Covid pandemic in Delmont PA. The drive up from Northern VA entailed a lot of mountain roads, which required a great demand on the brakes. The Power Stop pads held up great, no fading, no issues whatsoever.
And my wheels were free of any brake dust. I used Power Stop pads since 2018 on my E63 AMG, and this is the first year that I used them on the X5M. And I'm very pleased to say the least.

There are a lot of manufactures that make carbon ceramic pads, so it's your choice what you choose to install. But I'm sticking with Power Stop. In some areas, I reached over triple digit speeds on some of these roads, and my pads were up to snuff with hauling the beast done to legal speeds.
Yes, the Power Stop Z23 are what I use as well. But I have to use a different model pad for the rear as I have 4 piston Brembo's from a Porsche Panamera Turbo out back from Tronik Engineering. The added bite from 4 pistons sure does scrub off excess speed.

great information! Anymore info on Tronik? Their website appears to be down. Does the oem sensor fit the panamera rears?

Cheaper to buy it from them through ebay... (currency exchange fees vs eBay's USD price, etc....more so if you use a promotion...eBay is running a 5% ebay bucks promo now that ends at Aug 11, 2021 11:59pm PST tonight...valid on car parts and accessories).

Yes, those are the exact ones that I purchased. And yes, the OEM sensor will fit the pads for these calipers. If you buy these calipers, just remember when you order new rear pads, your ordering them for a Porsche Panamera, and yes Power Stop makes pads for these calipers using the same material Z23 as my front pads. Purchasing these calipers from Ebay does save you some money, I wished that I've known that when I ordered mine. But, I very happy with them and enjoy the added stopping power, especially when your braking extremely hard.
