Weird cuts or tears in driver door weatherstripping?
I noticed these weird cuts or tears in my drivers side door weatherstrip today. Anyone else have these? Did someone intentionally cut my weatherstripping? Checked all of my other doors, its only on the driver door.

Maybe from friction from getting in and out of the car?
Mine doesn't have these. I don't think anyone would go around intentionally cutting these since they could cause far more damage to the car with much less effort. |

Yes, I have those. I talked to my service adviser, he said its from getting In & Out in tight places Still, it should not tear if it's made of good quality and still retains its elasticity... Basically, they didn't want to fix it under warranty. |

Haha, ok thanks. It looked like it was torn/ripped to me when I looked closely, but there were like 3 in total and they looked too similar to be natural.

I think replacing those at the dealer is the best solution, so you don't have problems down the road. |

Bmw is known for using cheap rubber throughout. Like All their engine seals, weather striping, wire insulation, etc. It's their planned obsolescence in my opinion.

Just found some tears in mine yesterday. It was actually flipped inside out when I found it. Found a few ooooooold threads on it. Need to order a new one. Shouldn't be hard to replace.

My X5 had those tears in the door rubber seals too. Dealer SA said it's wear and tear and wouldn't cover under the warranty. However it's not expensive(Under $20) to order parts online and DIY. I think they are called rear door front rubber seal.

Have this on my 2015 as well. Only front driver side door. I never make contact with it when getting in and out. That door gets opened exponentially more than the other doors. Seems that they will eventually crack over time.

I had that on driver side door. Dealer replaced it under warranty but made me waited almost 2 hours to replace it. The SA claimed they spent most of the time taking the glue residue off the body.

Mine did the same thing and was replaced under warranty. I do not park in tight place ever, I don’t rub on the seals when getting in and out, my X sits inside 98% of its life and I lubricate my seals regularly. They are simply defective or poor quality seals, definitely not user error.

I just had this go in mine. the argument that it's in a tight spot is BS - it's a seal on the rear door that pivots towards the car when you open the rear door. It doesn't move when opening the driver's door. Maybe when we enter and exit the drivers side we brush up against it.
Anyway, I need to replace mine. I found the part. Is it a self adhesive product? Any recommendations for removing the old adhesive? |

i changed this thing today make sure u dont try rubbing the glue off with ur bare hand. freaking took my skin off from my thumb. I used rubbing alcohol and a microfiber towel and rubbed it off. Took a bit of rubbing but comes off. Strips goes on easy though. I would also suggest using Gummi Pflege on all the rubber strips.

Mine doesn’t have any cuts or slits in it…but I have noticed that I have caught the top section of it when exiting the vehicle when I park on the right side of the garage and I’m being careful not to ding the f06’s passenger door. It usually occurs if I have other items in my hand…so it’s a balancing act getting out without dinging the other car’s door. When I go to close the X5’s driver’s door (usually with an elbow if hands are full)…if I rubbed up against this trim piece…when the door has closed…the upper few inches are rolled back and caught in the door.
So it is a possibility that this piece of trim can be damaged when exiting in a tight space…I’m a witness that it can occur. I can actually flip that upper section back with my finger when I have the driver’s door open. I think in my situation, the top of this piece has been torn which makes it easy for it to be flipped back if I rub up against it exiting the vehicle. EDIT: just went out to the garage to take some pics of mine…and show how the upper few inches can be rolled back (if rubbed against while exiting) and get caught in the door when it closes: 1st pic shows trim in place when door is closed

We inherited this problem from the PO of our 2015 35d. Have new parts here on hand to fix. They are fairly cheap at ~$25 each. I imagine hardest part, as described above, is getting all the old adhesive residue off. Very similar to replacing pano roof seal. PITA.

If you have some WD40 on hand…it works well as an adhesive remover. You’ll want to use a CLOTH rag (don’t use paper towels) to help facilitate adhesive removal. You may need to spray the cloth rag to get it well lubricated (something like an old time poultice)…then let it set on the adhesive for a minute (to soften it)…then use the cloth rag to remove the softened adhesive. Once all the adhesive is removed…have another gentle cleaner (like rubbing alcohol) to remove any WD40 oily residue so that the new gasket will have a clean/dry surface to adhere to.
