Good info, thanks for sharing. I assume the axle recall applies to ALL F85s? That is, regardless of whether or not you have the clicking present currently?

As a follow up, I ran my VIN on BMW USA's website and it shows no open recalls. My car is a 2017. Curious to know what others find. You can check recall status with your VIN here: http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/conte...eoverride=true

I did the same and no open recalls for my 2017 X6M.

When I installed my spacers last weekend, I used air from my compressor to blow out the holes in the rotors (lots of brake dust). I definitely noticed a reduction in the brake noise after that but it didn't totally eliminate it

I noticed the brake squeal completely goes away when I pressure wash my wheels. The rotors inadvertently gets sprayed clean. The squeak comes back 6 days after washing. I wash every 7 days so it squeaks for 1 to 2 days a week unless I skip a wash. There is no fix according to BMW.

If you have access to an air compressor, you can blow the dirt/dust off your rotors and it will quit the brake noise. I do it to mine before I go for a drive.

I just got my 2017 X5M serviced yesterday. I had them look into the clicking noise and they diagnosed it. Their suggested fix is to install spacers on the front wheels to prevent them from hitting something causing the clicking? Has anyone else had this suggested to them as the fix?

yep

clicking went away for a few weeks then it came back. the third fix finally fixed it for me, well, almost...clicking is there but very, very subtle now and I can live with it lol

the final and third fix involved replacing. barley any clicking since May

Do you know if those spacers change the effective offset of the wheels? I have to imagine yes

Front axle clicking

I have a 2013 X5M, and recently swapped the stock rotors with 2014-2017 cross drilled rotors. I now have a clicking noise on the front axle. It sounds to me that its a rotor issue.

I took my X5M to a local shop and they show me two interesting things. The latest generation rotor to hub design has two set screws. Only one set screw is used on my 2013 because there is only one hole in the hub. They had a couple of spare setscrews at the shop so they installed them, since the ones I had did not fit the new rotor design. They also noted that the rotor would slip relative to the hub, if I remember correctly, even with the setscrew on. This explains why a friction disc is possibly needed, between the hub and the rotor, if the rotor slips even with the wheel bolted on. To think, I used to hate the rust that formed between the rotor and the hub when I changed rotors in the past.

On the post by RPI-X5, I looked up the part referenced as a friction disc.

This link is for the front axle:

https://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/...108053073.html

For the rear axle:

https://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/...108053074.html

I am going to purchase these and hopefully this will fix my issue.

john

My car is out of warranty so I called an Indy shop and he says from the description I gave him it sounds like axles. The info I got on here from different threads doesn’t say axles were the issue. I’m not trying to pay for axle replacement if that’s not what the problem is.

I figured that but this was what he said without even seeing the car yet. I’m hoping it’s not an axle. I’ll show him this thread when I drop it off and if he says it’s an axle after looking at it I might take it to another shop for a second opinion.

Mine started making clicking noise at 28k miles.
Need to take it to dealer, interesting if my CPO Extended warranty will cover it

Took my babe to the dealer here in Long Island. They changed axles and rotated the wheel bolts one forward and remounted. Also resurfaced a "friction plate" on the front wheels. Clicking has gone away for now.

Mine is clicking again. All of the posts I've come across with people getting theirs fixed all involved a vehicle still under warranty. Id like to know what I should expect to pay if I take it into a dealer.
