F15 NBT Evo Retrofit

So this started when I rented a 2018 3 series in Mexico and realized I do enjoy carplay quite a bit and NBT is so outdated. Also while I had RTTI, I didn't get traffic on most of my city route and google maps was so much better.

Here are a list of parts bought and approx prices ...

1. NBT HU ID 5 $550 from a north american car
2. APIX1 voltage cable $40
3. Wifi antenna $8
4. ATM wire loom $221
5. FSC codes $125
6. ATM unit: $250 also from a north american car with working RTTI, connecteddrive

Note: I did not upgrade the APIX1 HU as I don't want a touchscreen.

Shipping and taxes: approx $150.

Installation: 1 hour

Coding: minimal, all FDL.

Have a fully functioning NBT Evo HU with ID6 lite. Definitely one of the most enjoyable mods for me.

Since there are no existing threads on this (mostly there on F30 forums), will create this for others who need more info on this.

Update 6/16/19:
Ok guys, just wanted to post an update. I ended up downgrading the idrive on the retrofitted NBT evo to 18-03 and now everything including connecteddrive, send to car, remote ventilation etc. is working like OEM. It even allowed me to renew them or buy additional stuff.

The dealbreakers for me personally:
1. Bye bye warranty;
2. Dealer will not be able to diagnose the car;
3. When the RTTI will expire, there's not way to extend it (officially).

Better off to get BimmerTech MMI addition for Apple TV then mirror your phone to the screen.

I would have gone that route if they supported wireless CarPlay.

My warranty is done anyways. I will look into the RTTI extension. I am told there is a paper renewal form that I can just fill and fax. FWIW RTTI in Canada is quite expensive to renew (approx $400 for 3 years) and is only $50/year in USA so I might come out ahead. Real question is if I need it with Google Maps.

It will be better than CarPlay since it is a full mirroring.
That way, you can play YouTube on the iDrive screen and any other application that is enabled in your iPhone.

I wish I own an out of warranty or outdated BMW, I would install that.

I just converted my AppleTV box to be powered up using DC power.

Mirroring is nice, but I prefer wireless CarPlay. It's cleaner and no fiddling with orientation or selecting apps. Everything is in the CarPlay. YouTube can be also added to CarPlay 🤣

Really? Mind sharing info on YouTube on CarPlay and playing while driving?
It will save me time from converting them and putting music video in my thumb drive,

well the issue is, you'll need a jailbroken iphone. then just download either NGXPlay or Carbridge. both apps allow you to add any app to the CarPlay menu.

Bimmertech BMW CarPlay MMI seems like a real CarPlay, not like screen mirroring.

I'm very eagerly looking into that, might get it for Waze, once my RTTI/Apps expires. BMW Canada charges $300/year for these as APPS($200 option) are required for RTTI

I would do it but no RTTI, is a killer for me. Are you going to post full DYI guide on installation?

i've used bmw rtti, apple maps, waze and google maps. all have some type of rtti, but waze always seems to be more accurate then others. apple and google seems to be 2nd best. bmw maps seems to be the worse in rtti

Yep, I heard it before from other BMW owners but to me it feels like when everyone is using waze or apple maps or google maps and they get re-routed to the same streets vs BMW RTTI keeps it's own way of making routes. Once I was going from SF to San Mateo and BMW RTTI saved me at least 15 minutes by re-routing me via SFO since it was an accident on 101 by the airport. I compared BMW RTTI with Google and Waze and so far I'm pretty satisfied with BMW one.

You are right, it is. Lol.
I would just get it either way, since you will not renew the BMW service anyway.
Just wait for the right time, sometime they have deal going on.

I am their dealer, but sometime their deal is better than what I can give out.

Hate to talk more about the RTTI as this thread is about HU retrofit.

I use Waze on iPhone when I'm driving in and around my home and work... as RTTI don't show traffic info for those roads, it's limited to just major roads.

I use RTTI when I'm traveling long distance, between cities due to its integration on HUD.
So I don't think I can give up RTTI easily.

I feel like this is area specific, but if I retrofit to ID6 I don't want to give up my BMW RTTI. How about the rest of the apps like XM radio and Connected Drive app?

Is it not possible to jump to ID6 from NBT? Just curious as I think the ID5 is starting to look older.

ID5 can be coded to ID6lite which is essentially ID6. I am sure it can be coded to handle full ID6. I was not going to replace the display to touch or have gesture control so essentially it makes no difference.

You don't have to given up RTTI as long as you install an ATM and don't use GPS emulators. North american ATMs are hard to find which is why it took me a little while to source one. RTTI works and can be renewed. Again, if you need traffic on roads that RTTI does not cover, there is no alternative to carplay.

XM radio will need to be purchased. I had a yearly subscription on my last one and call and see if they will just move over.

Connecteddrive is tricky. It works for some folks over on F30 forum so I am still figuring it out.

I can but there isn't much to post - if you need to see how to remove NBT HU there are whole youtube videos. The idea is to get the right parts and they all connect together. I will post the coding I needed to do here since that isn't easy to find.

I had a similar module on my old 5 series. Cool in concept, didn't use it more than a few times in practicality since it wasnt worth the hassle. Trust me, my goal is to not fiddle in my pocket and find my phone to start something and mirror. Its to keep my phone in my jacket or pants, drive away and still access whatsapp or waze from the idrive which is what I find cool.

I am super interested in getting CarPlay working out of the box, so sj22 do you mind sharing from where did you sourced the parts, if legitimate and had a good experience I might use the same. I did a quick search and found this
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/BMW-NBT-EVO-...VZts4Z&vxp=mtr
My warranty expires in few months so I can start now .

What is your build date? What version of NBT do you have? Evo 4?

As I pmed, I bought a lot of stuff from that seller without issues.

If you have EVO 4, its very easy. If you do the programming yourself, you will need a CAN filter to prevent the NBT HU to go into component protection due to mismatched VIN. Once you install it with the filter, you can update the firmware and insert the right FSC codes and the NBT HU will set the vin as your vehicle vin and you can remove the CAN filter and everything will be OEM.

If you have NBT and not NBt HU you will need the list from my post above.

Thank for reply., my build date is Oct/2015, and I think I have NBT, and not EVO for sure. The ebay-seller looks good just wondering about the CAN filter, and other parts needed. I also have E-SYS software and have done some coding before but this is a big job, might be too much for you but would be good if you can post a DIY guide?
