2018 X5M needs brakes at 18k. Normal?

Like the title says, my ‘18 needs brakes at only 18k miles. Is this normal? That seems way earlier than any car I’ve had before, including many BMWs, X5s, and Ms. And what can I expect?

Are you the original owner? Just asking in case maybe the person before enjoyed a few track days...but in all seriousness that does seem way too early. I'm at 67k miles and just nearing the point where the dealership will swap mine out. Best of my knowledge, the original owner never touched them either.

I’m not and that may well be the problem. Thanks.

18,000 miles is way to early for needing brakes. I'm currently at 62,000 and have about 1/4 life left. Have you looked at these massive rotors, they are very robust, and larger than the two-piece rotors on my E63 AMG. And those rotors last up to three sets of pads. And these rotors are thicker. You probably just need a set of pads.

It all depends on driving styles.

18k is not normal, but in the hands of a certain driver. It can be normal

Not sure that's normal for any car. But is it for rotors and pads or just pads?

For comparison, mine has 44K on it and almost needs new rotors and pads.

Do you happen to have a BMW extended maintenance plan? If so, check to see if it covers rotors and pads. (My BMW Ultimate Care+ plan covers both) If not, maybe you can get one and have them covered under it?

Looks like just pads. And no, no maintenance plan.

That's a relief!

Is it a CPO? You need to have CPO status to get the best plans.

Either way, might be worth seeing if you can grab a plan that will cover some major items and/or wear and tear items.

Having a solid independent shop and/or cool dealer is obviously great too.

Good luck!

I need to replace my rear rotors and pads soon, the rotor has a visible lip, and the rear pads are thin, and won't pass a safety inspection due in August. Luckily for me, I already have new rotors and ceramic pads just sitting in the corner waiting to be installed.

my M6 goes thru back brakes every 15k miles due to traction control. It's user error!

I would think the X5M would probably be better on brakes from traction control issue, but if you have a lead foot (which you should)... then you need to stop that 5400lb monster somehow

Same happened on my M5. Rears were out long before the fronts, but not by much.I think the rears were at about 35k when I replaced them.

My X5M had all 4 corners replaced at 44k by the dealer on dealers dime.😄

Literally just under 44K and through a little creative pushing I got the dealer to replace all four corners.

My shop told me, that they would charge me $500 to install my new pads and rotors. Not bad considering.

That sounds incredibly cheap for some reason... Good stuff assuming they're OEM parts! I think you need sensors too by the way, might be good to double-check.

Each front rotor is $350 and rear is $275 and there aren't any aftermarket options that I'm aware of. I'm pretty sure that's labor only.

Yes, $500 is just for labor, I’ve already purchased ceramic pads, rotors and sensors.

And you are correct, there are no aftermarket rotors for the X5M, that I’m aware of. Not unless you go with a full Brembo BBK.

That still sounds cheap to me. But hopefully I never have to find out! (just got mine replaced for $0 and I think I can renew my maintenance plan)

Thanks for the information on the parts costs, that's helpful for the future just in case.

Why does $250 per axle for brakes sound cheap to you ? In the Seattle area, we have some of the highest labor rates in the nation, and I'd expect to pay roughly 1.5 hrs labor per axle at an Indy shop, so $250 sounds about right.
