Called it, nothing new with these sort of issues/situations.

I don't get it. Why did this post die? He simply figured out the issue or got an answer from BMW and didn't want to update? Perhaps I'm still naive to the intricacies of forums but seems odd to me.

For some fault in the battery or whatever his issues was? That seems silly to me. Why do an NDA for what might be an issue that could affect other models..

Right. I understand the what. Just not the why. I would think BMW would want to get ahead of the issue, investigate, and offer a solution to other customers. Well I'm sure it worked out for the guy anyway.

They may be doing that behind the scenes (I hope), especially since this isn’t the first time we’ve read about this happening in a F85/86.

I hope as well. Cause a spontaneous electric fire in the trunk definitely isn't what I want to see in my daily driver.

The following is unverified info, I hope somebdy better informed may correct or verify it. It seems that all X5 M use a 24 Volt electric power steering system and that the second 12 V battery is switched in series to the main one to get that voltage. This would also explain why you should attach battery chargers only to the specific point under the hood; the system somehow switches batteries as needed and gets them both charged with a 12 V charger. The purpose of the voltage converter is not clear to me, unless the steering system actually works with 48 Volt. It is unfortunate that we X5 M users cannot get a service manual explaining how our cars work. Years ago I had a Corvette C5 in Europe, bought for 100 $ its Service Manual and could understand and take care of the car mostly by myself. |

Has this ever happened to an F15? This is the second case I read on this forum for the M variant. Quite scary...
