Tire rotation yes or no

Do I need to rotate tires at the time of balancing?

BMW service manager said not required since its AWD.

Discount tires said wrong advice. Tires should be rotated whether car is awd or 2wd.

Car in the question is 2015 X5 x35i with 19" stock Pirelli tires.

tires should always be rotated, depending on the tread pattern of the tires. either front to back, or side to side, or cross pattern

I never rotate tires on 4WD SUVs.

But that's just me though I've never had a problem. Granted my setup is staggered so rotation isn't even possible.

Ok cool, I will let DT do the rotation as well.

if you have stagger setup, where rears have wider tires then no.
if all 4 tires are same width then yes.

u can still rotate staggered setups as long as the tires aren't directional

How?

in stagger setup, rear wheels are slightly bigger with wider tires then the fronts.

He means across the axel not front to back. Sadly most hi-perf tires are directional so it's not possible.

When I replaced the tires on our '14 X5d at ~36K miles, with 19" wheels on a square setup, the difference in tread depth across 12 readings (3 across the tread width on each of 4 tires) was 1 mm with the exception of two readings which were 2 mm different. From my experience rotation is not only unnecessary, but would not provide a benefit.

Unless tire rotation is no cost then forget it because the extended tire life is not that much greater anyway. (IMO)

I would only rotate them if you're getting uneven wear.

If directional and staggered, and you really motivated to do it, then you'd have to unmount the tires and swap them side to side to keep them facing the same direction.

I have 20" staggered setup so cannot rotate front-rear.

I was looking at the tires and it looks like all 4 corners have some negative camber. Do others with the wider tires notice if the inner tread wears quicker than the outer tread?

On my 911 I unmount the rears and remount them on the opposite side to even out the wear across the tread and try to get a few more miles out of those wide tires. Does anybody do this with their X5?

I have the 19" Pirelli Scorpions on my X5 and have been rotating them every 5k. My tire wear is very even and the cost to rotate is minimal. Seems like a good way to get the max wear out of the tires. I see no downside.

Common on most BMW's with the way the suspension is setup from factory. I had an alignment done after I lowered the vehicle and added my Conti DWS06. I definitely had inner wear on my outgoing P-Zeros.

Same, and discount tire rotates tires for free!

Sorry to resurrect an older thread, but I figure it's better than starting a new one. I'm getting an uneven wear on my 2015 X5 F15 at almost 20k miles. Car is pretty much bone stock with 19" 255 Goodyear Eagle RFT tires. Oddly enough the front tires have significant more wear than the rear. I was under the impression that BMW Xdrive is a rear biased system so if anything shouldn't the rear be more worn? I've since rotated my tires but can't help but wonder if there's something not right with my car?

Could be an alignment issue.

Toe in (or out but the car would drive a bit sketchy) is usual cause of rapid tire wear. Alignment check is your first stop.

From what I've read BMW's Xdrive is more of a traction related feature. Head hard into turns all the time and like it or not your front tires will probably show more outside edge wear than the rears. Rotating every 5k will at least even it out, so all 4 of your tires will show outside edge wear from hard cornering. Rotating will increase your overall milage on a set of 4 tires.

But the flip side is driving overly careful to prevent wear is no fun!

I assume you have to reset/recalibrate the TPMS if you rotate?
