I literally can't handle it anymore))) After free maintenance stopped, i need to change the oil. To my surprise, there is a label SAE 0w 30 under my hood. Can't miss it it is big))) Is Mobile 1 0w30 ESP going to work? I purchased it and suddenly become very anxious))
I know it has been covered multiple times....

It will be fine, the ow30 viscosity is what you're most concerned with. The other labels on oils have to do with the additives. "high mileage, emission protection, etc".

What bothered me is the fact that BMW dropped Mobile 1 as recommended oil, and even on Mobile 1 site there is no approval for BMW.

I used 0W-40 for a certain stretch, till an oil leak which forced me to take it to an Indy shop. I was advised to start using 5W-30 as 0W-40 was too "thin".

What's the confusion? Whether to use 0w-30 or Mobil 1?

Ive been using 0w-40 on both my AMG and my 50i with no issues. But I had like 8 spare bottles and just used the last on my last change. Next I'll be moving to Castrol as it still meets BMW certification.

Nothings going to happen to your car if you use Mobil 1. They just recently changed their formula and it doesn't meet BMW criteria. There's articles and threads on here discussing this.

As far as weight 5w-30, 0w-40, are fine. Good rule is thicker in the summer and thinner in the winter.

My bad, you're right. They did recommend 5w-30 though.

Well yes and no. The first number is the viscosity not at operating temp (cold start), the second is the viscosity at operating temp.
Those in milder climates can easily get away with 5w30 and may even consider 5w40 for hot climates.

Looks like it doesn't have BMW approval.

Get a oil change at the dealer and call it a day with promotions every month I don't see it being that big of a difference then doing your own oil plus you get a courtesy mpi. My dealer uses 0w30 as the 5w30 has been discontinued a couple of years ago only a few dealers still use the 5w30 and that's due to leftover stock.

My closest dealer is 40 mls away. I just cannot justify a trip just for oil. Indy will do it.

Step 1. Look in the owners manual to see recommendations for viscosity
2. Look on the back of the oil bottle to see if it is BMW spec ( additives). This is more for deisel engines. I hope this helps

Any oil with LL01 spec is fine for the gasoline engines. I’m switching to castrol Edge 0w40 which seems to be the best in the market in that category (folks at BITOG can’t stop raving about it), and best of all it’s about $22 per 5QT jug at Walmart.

I've always used Shell oil, possibly biased as my dad used to work for them for 30 yrs in exploration, but it is also the official BMW oil these days (at least in Europe, the Middle East and Africa):

You can get Castrol 0w-40 for a great price at Wal-Mart. And it's euro spec.

I get for $20.48 on subscribe and save via Amazon and filters from BMW of south Atlanta for like $6 in bulk. Keep your eye on Amazon for fluctuating prices and lock it in when you can.

Wow... I must admit BMW and oil are frenemies))) I gave in and bought overpriced BMW 0W 30 twin-turbo oil. I will not return Mobil 1 and use it for my wife's E90. BMW dropped Mobil1 over the favour of something else, while Mobile 1 never changed its formula and in fact, one of the best one around. I dedicated past few days studying this subject and pretty sure that choosing one brand over by another by BMW is nothing but legal mambo jumbo involving who pays more for having their logo on oil cup.

Here’s the BMW oil if you don’t want to buy it to from the dealer:
Pennzoil Platinum Euro-L Full Synthetic 5W-30 Motor Oil (1-Quart, Case of 6) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZEK6Z64/

Though I get mine from the dealer which is the 0W30 version which is actually cheaper than Amazon (go figure). Also factory oil is sold in Liters so you only need 8 bottles instead of 8.5 Qt.
