https://www.christopherprice.net/mob...-3460.html/amp In any case, if you’re changing oil sooner than the ridiculous intervals set by BMW, non-LL01 Mobil 1 should be fine. |

I noticed an oil leak in my driveway where I park the X5. Ive tried measuring the oil level using the iDrive system but it always cuts off around 17-20% and goes back to the option of “start measurement” or “cancel”. And yes, countless times I’ve met the criteria of being on leveled ground, on P or N, and engine at proper temperature and it still doesn’t read it. Just yesterday, I got a message saying “oil too low”, so I ran to Walmart to buy Mobil 1’s 0W-40 Euro spec.
Could this be the reason that the iDrive won’t measure the oil? Also, any common oil leaks in the N55 Sdrive35i X5? Searched the forum but found nothing

Ironically, I used a technically better Mobil 5W30. Once I did an oil change, problem went away. Buy I never experienced the measurement process ending at 17 to 20%. As for an actual oil leak, I had one a year ago but thought it was A/C condensation. Was a high pressure oil leak and engine had to be degreased. $1000 for parts and labor to clean up the mess. |

Didn't mean to thread jack so to keep this relevant; I used Mobil 1 0w-40 European spec to top it off

I've had my X5 for about year and half now (almost 80K miles on the clock now) and I've been doing my oil changes right around the 6K mile mark. Been using Mobil 1 0W40 with no issues (I live in TN so not super harsh winter here), but this thread has me second guessing that especially since my X5 is getting up in the miles. Thinking about switching to Castrol Edge should I stick with the same weight or change to 5W30?

No need for head spinning. The manual lays out all the various viscosities. Just make sure your oil is LL-01. Looking forward to my first X5 oil change at upcoming CCA DIY event.

Y'all just need to do some research on what oil weight even means before all these questions. There's no "wrong" answer here. Just what suits your needs best. Where you live, the season, age, all play factors. That's what you should use to pick YOUR oil weight. Brands...best is Amsoil hands down don't even try and dispute that, royal purple is a close second but cheaper than Amsoil, Mobil 1 is still and always will be a tier 1 contender (yes I'm aware it technically doesn't meet LL-01 anymore), Castrol is good too and Shell (BMW oil) is fine too. Liqui-moly earns honorable mention although not as familiar with them but I do like their fluorescent additive to check leaks
