I agree; I would like it match the estimation it spits out when starting the vehicle. On road trip or mainly highway this vehicle really boogies and the miles per gallon turn into smiles per gallon... sadly it's the city driving that ruins the experience.

Very true but it would depend which engine "mode" is being used for a tank of gas for the EPA numbers. I would not expect SportPlus to get EPA numbers"

Getting about 11.5mpg, just had break in service done at 1200 miles today so I'm hoping to improve those numbers.

I am coming out of a Cayenne turbo that does a bit better than that with a 26 gallon tank I get 20 highway and 17 cruising back roads. That is a range I will miss! I am surprised the X5M doesn't do better. Despite the above, I am excited as hell I just ordered an X5M and was told a build slot was secured so 5 weeks or so can't come soon enough!

Thank you for your input and comments. Let's make one thing clear, I knew I wasn't getting a Prius. At the same time what's wrong with wanting to get a few extra miles of efficiency.

I like to drive it like a gentleman, knowing the power is there when needed or wanted and I can turn into a roaring beast at press of the M1 button.

i would say 90% of the time i am in eco/efficiency mode and only sport/sport+ when on highways. i dont love the mpg but i don't care either. try resetting the adaptation and see if your numbers improve.

Out of curiosity I did some digging through my old Excel files, where I have kept detailed mileage records of past vehicles. Official fuel economy figures are rough guidelines IMO, and what has been more instructive for me is how my own cars have compared over the years.

2008 X5 4.8L (naturally aspirated) V8, 6 speed auto, ownership average 14.8 L/100 km.

2012 X5 4.4L (turbo) V8, 8 speed auto, ownership average 13.9 L/100 km.

2018 X5M to date 15.6 L/100 km; I expect this to drop by a few tenths once the engine is fully broken in.

2014 Jaguar XFR-S (5.0L 550 bhp supercharged V8, 8 speed auto), ownership average 12.6 L/100 km.

So the M car likes to drink, but the numbers when compared to the past X5's are not surprising given the power output.

The 4.4L X5 made more power and torque but got noticeably better economy than the NA 4.8L; I'm guessing a lot of that was due to the 8 speed auto.

The Jag did quite well, but it was about 1000 lbs. lighter...

Trying to search but can't find directions on how to reset adaptations.

I only ask because I moved to non-ethanol 93 octane from Shell at my local station.

Do you drive like granny? Or maybe 99% of your mileage is highway? I can't explain otherwise how you managed to stay at those numbers

50i here, daily commute, with about 30-40% highway, Computer shows 12.5l/100km, which is about 19mpg.
If I use eco mode and drive like my granny, I can get 11.4l/100km....

Btw, Shell 91 gas in Canada does not have ethanol in it, so I guess that helps...

I live in a rural area. My 40km (25 mi) commute consists of empty backroads and a highway, with 2 stop signs and 2 traffic lights. I could achieve considerably better fuel economy if I drove more sympathetically.

Ummm....no offense or anything, but how could you possibly by surprised by low MPG? It's a twin turbo V8 BMW M car. MPG isn't gonna be good, especially if you drive it the way it's meant to be driven.

This thread begs the question and it is sincere. Why did you buy an M car if you are going to drive like a granny or worry about fuel consumption. I promise I won't judge, I'm just curious.

I don't think anyone bought an M thinking it would be a Prius. And most of us drive it the way it is supposed to be. BUT, getting somewhere in the EPA and BMW claimed MPG range would be nice. I'm getting 12mpg right now on my drive that is 50/50 highway and city. Not close to the 14mpg for 100% city

I live in a city, so 90% of the time, you won't be using any of its power potential. So, maybe they liked the way it was styled? Or enjoyed the nicer interior? Or really wanted a red X5?

For me, personally, power isn't nearly as potential as styling. If I had an X5M, I guarantee you I'd drive it like a granny 90% of the time.

I don't know who buys these vehicles for gas mileage. I bought the 50i and the last thing I worry about is the gas mileage. If you are worried about that pint then this vehicle is not in your price range. I laugh when people ask me what type of mileage I get with my 488 and I tell them "I really don't care".

I have a 530e that I bought for miles per gallon and I'm at 40.8 mpg life to date. I bought my X5M for smiles per gallon. I have 27k miles in X5M and I'm at 11.8 mpg life to date and more proud of that than the 40.8. Both numbers reflect my ying and my yang!

Your X5M results mirror mine for just under 3 years with 37k miles.

That's easy to say if you don't own one. Trust me...if you did you would look for every possible opportunity to open it up. It's impossible to resist.
