Sold my Omega to buy an Apple watch

Looks like the Apple watch bands will be pretty expensive:

Yes, as with many watches and cars, one can buy the basic version or the fancy one. Personally, I doubt there's anything at all that would make me feel pressed to buy a gold Apple Watch (AW). I haven't yet felt the need to buy a solid gold computer of any sort, so I doubt I'd buy a gold AW.

The casual one that'll run ~$350 will do just fine for me, that is if I even bother to get an AW at all.

All the best.

I wouldn't even buy the first model.

This will just be another craze
where people will have to "keep up with the Jones'" and buy one just to say that they own one.

I look at my phone too much for work, that I really don't need anymore "alerts" that someone is trying to "bug" me on a Saturday night.

I'm over the fads, but to each their own.

I thought about getting one if it was $350 or so. Then after I got a Seamaster there really is no need for a smart watch, especially when the special edition is going to be thousands of dollars. No thanks Apple.

An Omega for an iWatch = downgrade.
A precious metal iWatch = fail....I mean why....throwing money away. The gold won't even hold it's value being used on that watch in just one year.

I've stopped buying watches for a while just to see how the Apple Watch will turn out.

I'll spend $400 on one, assuming a metal band (I don't want any more rubber banded watches). I "might" spend $400 on the leather banded watch, but that's pushing it. I'm sure the bands will be proprietary like everything else Apple.

If the metal band watch is $1000+, sweet, no Apple Watch for me. Just not worth it. 20k - even if someone gave me $1,000,000,000, I wouldn't waste the money on one (I would have watches that cost more at that income level, but not an Apple Watch).

gauging by how quickly my iphones grind to a halt and become uselessly slow this sounds like an incredibly horrible investment.

Rubber band for me if i ever bother to pick one up. unless they let you upgrade the watch itself down the road ( doubtful). If you buy the rubber form what i understand you cant even upgrade to the bracelet...

I wouldn't buy one. Technology moves so fast, it'll be out of date in a year. Not worth spending that much money on a device that gets outdated that quick. It also isn't an independent device - you have to have your phone with you for it to work.

A couple hundred dollars as a gizmo toy... maybe. But I'd rather just use my phone rather than look at tiny text on my wrist.

I feel the apple watch/ moto360 could never be a substitute for a true watch (tag heuer, rolex, breitling, etc.). Smart watches are more of a fad than anything. Even if it had excellent build quality the mechanics just aren't there.

Just about any mechanical Omega will hold its value over time, if properly cared for. The same can not be said for an Apple watch, precious metal or not.

I really don't understand the purpose of a smart watch in any way, shape, or form. Is it that hard to check your phone? So you look at your watch, see you have a message, and then take your phone out to respond? Sounds like an extra unnecessary step to me.

My watch comes off only when I'm playing sports or doing housework in times where either it could get damaged (unlikely) or it would be encumbering to wear it (reaching behind sinks etc). It's automatic and its water resistant. It comes in the shower, the pool, and the ocean. The shower thing makes people go crazy about the seals and everything, but I haven't changed my habits in 20 years and I've never had a water breach. I can't fathom taking it off throughout the day to charge it, its supposed to be there all day every day to tell me what time it is!

I think if I were going to buy one with an eye toward future collector "chops," the first one would be the one I'd go for. If I were buying to use it as an accessory in my daily life, I might wait a generation or three, assuming the functionality isn't so compelling that I just couldn't wait.

All the best.

Apple ordered more than 5 million watches for the initial run so I highly doubt that these watch will ever become collectible

Oh, I think they will. But for the gold ones, I suspect folks will bin them en masse once something better comes along. They'll become valuable just like original Atari video games and Model T Fords have become.
It'll take time, probably a long time, as the watches are small and work for years, making folks reticent to discard them, but discard them they will. They'll become collector's items long before they begin to show a dramatic rise in price as such, but it'll happen, even if not in yours or my lifetime. Too, as you said, the huge quantity of the initial general issue also contributes to how long it'll take.

All the best.

A $20,000 Apple watch! Who in their right mind would buy that? I wonder if the internals will be different in that watch or if it's just the band that is gold? I'll stick to my Sinn and saving up for a A. Lange.

I bought a Black Sport 42mm about a month ago and love it. Battery life is much better than I expected )I'm easily getting two days). Also Blue Tooth range much better than expected. I was surprised to see I really do not have to be that close to my Iphone. Yea, its a toy I know, but I'm loving it
