They have duracell platinum agm batteries from what i saw.

The 48/H6 AGM battery is a smaller size & capacity…and is an ”optional” selection for the main battery. It is too big to fit where the smaller LN1 AGM (which is a 140R/H4 battery class size) 50 AH battery sits in the F15 battery compartment.

The 48/H6 is the smaller capacity battery that usually has 70-80 AH (amp hour) rating (depending on manufacturer). The 94R/H7 battery usually has a 80-85 AH rating. The 49/H8 battery usually has a 90-95 AH rating. And the 95R/H9 battery is the largest capacity (and size) and has a 105-110 AH rating.

See the chart below (East Penn) for size & specs of the aforementioned battery sizes. The LN1 (140R/H4) battery is at the bottom of the chart…the other AGM battery sizes are at the top.

Got the new aux battery today from RockAuto, and did some test on it before i will install it Saturday or Sunday.
Interesting that the battery is Rated @ 520 CCA and the test Measured at 750 CCA! Is that normal? hmmm

Thanks for that info. I was looking at all that info but it was confusing about who is paying for the shipping label witch i see as me. At this point to pay the label and get $14 back not worth the time to send back. Thanks for your time and information Qsilver7

Battery replacement question:

If I replace both batteries at the same time (originals 7 years old), will I lose other IDrive info such as maintenance timing etc? I know I will have to register the main battery and put in date/time. Saw a video saying to disconnect both to replace either one, I'm thinking I might save some effort by leaving one connected all the time.

I replaced the 7 1/2 year batteries in my 50i this weekend. H8 AGM for main and I used an H5 AGM for th auxiliary battery. The pop out stop clip was removed for the Aux battery carrier and I moved the PCU over to the left 10-11 mm. H5 is the same width and height but is approximately 3/4 longer. I have a friend that works for a battery distributor and the H5 AGM was all he could get that would be close for the Aux one. I measured and determined I could get the 3/4 inch longer battery in. I registered the main using my Thinktool+. The Aux has a registration but does not use an IBS. There certainly could be a current shunt in the PCU but there also could be nothing more than CBS records update done when the Aux battery is registered. You can bet your ass I won't risk no registration and have a some German warrior being throwing supercharged fireballs at me for failing to follow the supreme rule. The PCU original studs with nuts would work but there is room for 3 #12 x1/2 long drill point hex head screws to mount the PCU in a 1/2 inch left shifted position.

Would it be possible to post a few photos of what you did? I can only get a larger auxillary battery and would be helpful to see what you did. TY

All Chevy dealers sell that LN1 battery locally. It's exactly the same as OEM. Even though label says lower cca than OEM on visual inspection it seems like they just put on labels from same factory no actual difference other than printing a different cca and than inflating the price 5x. My f15 has all the options including rse and no issues aswell.

The H5 requires the black stop clip seen on yellow cloth to be removed. With batteries disconnected and out of the way, remove the 3 nots holding PCU to bracket. The bracket is shift left approx. 13 mm left and 6 mm forward. I drilled a 3/16" hole in the left mount area inboard of existing bolt hole. The edge of bracket is past the edge of lower black aux battery base plate. I used 3 of those self-drilling hex head screws and they readily cut their own holes in the base plate in their new locations. The left screw is located to the right of the welded nut for the original bolt and should be installed first and then install the other two screws in the holes where the original bolts went threw PCU bracket. The bracket is sturdy and PCU is not heavy so I have no worries PCU would detach in a collision. The main battery hold down is now just under the edge of PCU bracket but it slides into position easily and the bolt for it is easy to get in place if you use a piece of paper towel on bolt head to bind the bolt into a 13mm socket on a 6 inch or longer extension so it stays in socket until threaded in.
I used the larger H5 AGM battery as I could readily get it for a low price through a family member. I paid little more for both batteries than my local Chevy store or others wanted for the H4. The mod is invisible with PCU back in place and the bracket can be put back in original place if ever that was desired.
I was surprised to see the aux battery lead is 10 gauge. That would not support the electric power steering so I think the aux battery is for accessories only.
The use of aux batteries on the brand I worked for for decades was for accessories primarily during the engine off period for stop/start so radio, lights, and blower motor would not go off during engine restart and to lessen main battery discharge.

I'm looking for local pickup of batteries for my 2016 50i.

For the auxiliary, has anybody tried the H4-XEV from Advance Auto Parts?
Looks like the Chevy Bolt style ACDelco LN1AGM, looks like right size, and is AGM, price is half of what BMW wants, and I can pickup locally?

Good to see another battery brand (DieHard) selection for the smaller H4 aux battery we need. Hopefully it is vented and comes with a plug to fill the unused hole opposite the side that will be vented.

Too bad that the cost isn't more competitive. It cost more than the larger BMW 105AH H9 class size battery. My local BMW dealer sells the H9 105AH AGM battery for $236.

Agree on both points. Oddly, my local BMW/Mini dealers have been using DieHard brand batteries since BMW branded batteries are limited in supply.

So to compare apples to apples, it's good to confirm what you are buying. DieHard at dealer 1-2 year warranty vs. DieHard at Auto part store with 3 year then proration.

Another factor to check with dealer batteries is the "out the door" price vs. a $236 price if you have them install, which adds to overall cost.

Just to clarify...my local BMW dealership's parts dept. charged $236 for the battery +$18 core charge + local taxes - 10% BMW CCA discount. I was out the door (with the battery in my hands {not installed}) for $227 and change after returning the old battery.

Solid Deal there! I paid $166 shipped from Summit Racing for the AC Delco mentioned here. First one was used as a soccer ball during shipping so they sent me a replacement.

My buddy took his Mini to local dealer after I showed him the "value" service for battery replacement. They wanted something similar ($236) for an odd size battery, but only if they installed.

I was looking for battery replacement parts I needed found this thread... My car's been screaming about high discharge for over a year now and I've been managing with bi-weekly battery tender usage... Did four-corners new brakes & rotors, and finally bought replacement batteries. I found local BMW dealer cheapest option with 15% CCA discount for the batteries

Pre-tax prices came out to be $237 for the 92 Ah main and $197 for the 50 Ah auxiliary. Core was $18 for each.

(Interestingly the 105 Ah main was $205, but I bought the 92 Ah since that's what was in my vehicle)

That’s a great deal for the batteries. They are OEM batteries? The auxiliary battery from the dealer list for around $500 dollars.

Sorry no pictures, but both OEM, BMW branded with QR codes. My original 50 Ah was Varta branded. Both new ones just say Made in USA, no manufacturer branding otherwise, just had 06/23 stickers on them.

Took both home, put them on the battery tender, both immediately was shown as in topped-up state. Install was a breeze.

Quick Google of the 50 Ah part number shows a few sites listing it for less than $200.

EDIT: Since it shows you local that's from Rallye BMW.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for posting your experience and advice on this issue. I wanted to report that I successfully replaced the auxillary battery on my 2017 X5e using the LN1AGM battery ordered from RockAuto (without needing to register the battery), and it completed fixed the Max eDrive issue. It now drives in pure electric mode just fine. Just wanted to pass that along for the next person who encounters the same issue!
