I have mine done to keep the UV rays out and it works great. I have a clear ceramic one, not dark. It can be hot outside and I do not feel the sun rays at all when the cover is open and sunroof closed.

I think I heard somewhere that it can crack the glass but I have had no problems. Down in Florida and have had it for some months now.

I've tinted the sunroofs in my ISF and my C63. Never had a problem in Hawaii (and I had the ISF done about 8 years ago). There's all sorts of stories on various forums, but I've never had an issue. I would have done my F86, but my tinter was concerned about the potential for a water mark in the alcantara if it became wet.

Gents,

For anyone interested. I was just told by the owner of the place I got my X5 done that they use Madico brand tint on sunroofs, but you cannot go darker than 35%.

Here's the link to the website.

Never had a problem with tinted sunroofs. Had 20% on every car I had. Never heard of sunroofs breaking because of tints. I have heard of them shattering because of natural structural flexing. Especially during the cold months.

I'm a week into my pano roof being tinted. The difference is absolutely amazing in cutting down heat gain!

I just did my whole windshield with clear, just to block UV rays. The dash gets hot but not scorching like it used to and it cools down faster. This with sunroof done and I can feel the car cool down so much faster 🤙🏽

-there's some reflection but I use polarized shades during the day so I don't see it.

-Daytime use of HUD can now be seen better too (even with the P.Shades)

True. I couldn't see it with P.Sunglasses when not tinted. The shop that did it for me was hesitant because they said they had done it to a few BMWs and all came back complaining that the HUD was blurry.

I asked the shop for a sample of the tint to place where the HUD reflects and left it on for 24hrs. Drove day and night and could see with no issues so I got it done. Don't know what those complaining were talking about because it actually looks better 🤷🏽

What brand and model of tint did you guys use on your windshield? I want to do the same.

LLumar (looks like)A7R80 on windshield. Possibly same on sunroof….most places will not put on roof & if they do will not indicate it on invoice as "sun roof" or put down product code. But, I now can see HUD BETTER ( not like without polarized glasses) and solar gain from roof down markedly…here in SW Florida that is a big deal.

Update.. it "probably" was the A7R80 according to installer. He stated that were it his vehicle DO NOT" put colored film on sunroof…too much heat build up..a clear is/might be ok..which is what I did on mine. Cuts down on heat gain through windshield greatly as well.

LLumar ceramic 5% limo black on pano roof for 4 years. No problem at all. Only cons is the sky is very dark at night, hard to see the stars

Yeah, it looks like a few other F15/F85 owners have used the Llumar Air 80 for their windshields as well. I used it in my G55 and it worked really well!

And it sounds like the right film for the pano roof too.

640ijims (or anyone else for that matter) - what percent tint did you go with for the sunroof? I don't want to go dark necessarily, just cut down on the harshness of the sun this time of year.

Out of curiosity, have any of the windshield tinters in the thread seen any differences with their radar detector activity, especially with ceramic tint? I have a V1 hardwired and would consider doing the front windshield with something clear just to cut down on UV rays.

I did near zero darkening…installers at three shops said this was a no-no due to heat build up. Installed Llumar A7R80 which cut down solar gain immensely.
No problem with V1 Gen2 with above product on windshield.
Bonus is HUD is easier to see with polarizer sunglasses

Thanks, Jim. I am getting the Llumar AIR80, which has very little, if any, darkening properties, installed on the roof and front windshield. Unfortunately, I won't be getting it done until later in August, but at least it's on the calendar.

I also have the Gen2 V1 in the F85 and 996, and had several Gen1s before, and have grown used to the V1 being in the car.
