I finally found a local dealer in NH to give me a credit for the MPBK rotors to upgrade to the F85 big boys. Only charged me $70 on top of a steal of a price for the kit. Was a pleasure working with James of BMW Stratham! Patience rewards those who wait.

First I've seen the pistons painted over. Hope that's no biggie!

Did you do any coding? My buddy..former BMW tech is claiming there's no such thing. Standard brake job bleeding the brakes with fresh fluids and bleeding the ABS system using the factory computer. Can anybody chime in? |

The brakes will work without coding. But you will not get a good feel out of them. Also thought you had them not paint them. Or did you already have them to a shop to get painted? I'm a bit hesitant still cuz their price for a used set of calipers and no paint is barely less than new and painted. And both are still a lot a $$$

Yes they came unpainted and just got them back from the powdercoater. I owe you guys some measurements but Tronik is definitely getting his premium for his custom adapters and the precise modification of the calipers. The mounting posts are shaved down, there's additional brake pad plates and the insides of the calipers are also sanded down and shaved. Apologies as I've been on the move but I'll get you some good pictures. Receiving them unfinished you can see the work that was done to make these work. Yes, sure you can buy Touareg or Panamera calipers on the bay for probably 200$ each or even less but I would imagine you'd be hard pressed to achieve the same result.

I have not coded yet. I did all the bleeding myself, and the pedal is 10x better than the stock 50i brakes were. I can't wait for it to improve further after I code it.

Well today was Install day!
Wow these things are huge... Fronts went smooth as can be. The brakenetic rotors fit perfect and have the holes for the brake rotor retainer Allen head bolt. These brembos are giant! Rears got a little complicated. I don't know if it's a 35i thing ; but my backing plates needed to be replaced. The existing ones are too small and had to be modified (for now) to accommodate the larger rotor. They would have rubbed and would have had to be bent back to accommodate the rotor sitting properly. I did not realize this before the project; so we ground down the lip on the backing plate for now. I will revisit this at a later time when the new ones come in. The X5m brake calipers are the same size as the 35i ; but the pad is significantly more pronounced; it has more of a bite than the 35i. The bracket mounts directly like the old bracket but accommodates the larger rotor perfectly. Again, the retainer screws worked in the rear rotors too; using your existing screw. This was perfect on the front and rear; which was nice to be able to secure the rotor with the existing bolts and not have to fight them getting everything installed. I painted my rears black to match the front brembos. I pushed a liter and a half of fresh fluid through the system and got a really good bleed on the system. Pedal feels good; but seems a little weaker. I will go to the dealer next week and get them coded so this will stiffen up. Did a spark plug and coil tune up at the same time; what a giant pain in the butt getting to the last three plugs... you have to remove quite a bit of stuff to get at them. Make sure you get your thin walled 14pt socket also; it's the only way to get the plugs out! Can't wait to get my 599 wheels on in a couple weeks to better show these puppies off! The brembos swallow up 99.9% of my stock 19 inch wheels; clearance is mere millimeters in most spots! |

Correct, the X5m plates are larger. I don't think bending or cutting the original ones will effect anything. Maybe get more brake dust on some of your suspension components but other than that....
