Jacking up my X5

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
So I bought the lower front grill replacements (for sports package) from RG Sport and I also got the silver fin inserts. I'm going to tackle the job this weekend but I'm assuming I need to get a jack and a lug wrench? Can you rent a jack somewhere? Or where could I get one that's not too expensive. I don't really want to have to store a floor jack that I would rarely use.

Thanks

Harbor freight has great deals on jacks (3 ton) and get one of those Bmw jack pads for the jack points. Got my jack pad from amazon works good

I’m not sure how the install works for those but I’m assuming you’d be removing the front bumper? You don’t need to jack the car up to remove the bumper - it just makes it easier, without a jack you just have to angle the wheels to get at all the screws and rivets.

These are the instructions I found to do it: http://www.rgsportshop.com/image/dat...Grill_Trim.pdf
Not sure if it can be done without removing the wheels? This is probably easier than removing the front bumper.

I managed to do the install today without removing bumper or wheels and without jacking up car. I'm something of a magician!

Yeah it looks like based on the instructions you probably could have just removed a few screws of the lower plastic cover and stuck your hands in there.
How’d You manage to do it?

I removed the 2 rivets and 3 screws on the fender flare and maybe another 2 screws on the fender liner. I then released the tabs to pull the fender flare out (probably 4 or 5 tabs). Then I pulled the fender liner back and pushed it behind the tire so it stayed open. Then I removed the plastic panel on the underside of the car. This gave me access from the bottom and also from through where the fender liner was pushed back. It wasn't fun but after getting one side done the 2nd side was pretty quick. If I had car ramps at the front it would have been better.

Wow, must be fighting the fender liner to get that part in.

Share some pictures of your blood and sweat though.

I forgot to take pics. I wasn't actually sure if I'd be successful. It's definitely not the recommended way to do the install
But i will say the new lower grilles and fins look great

Thanks for the complements! I wanted to do that mod as as soon as I got the car. I can't stand the blank plastic they are putting in cars now. It's bad design. It's like the back of the honda civic. What is that crap?

That was the first thing that I saw when I picked up mine 5 years ago.
Couldn't stand it.
I don't understand why they put a grill that doesn't even looks like a grill.

Luckily after digging around the parts catalog, I found the half opening, which is much better than the fake grill.

Some argue what is the benefit of the open grill.
The ultimate answer is, to Make Grill Great Again!!!.
