Buy the newest one possible with warranty. Search threads here - the V8s have more issues than the 6's.

Correct. I bought a 2014 50i and had a couple of issues (front diff and engine oil leak) in the first 3 months so haven't driven it much. Hopefully its sorted out after this. It's a lot of fun and really powerful, fuel economy isn't great but it's a v8 twin turbo so what do you expect.

The 50i's are generally better spec'd than he v6's. Depends on what you're going to use the X5 for and what you want from it personally. Fun V8, general pootling about v6 (35i).

I was in the market for one but decided to go a different route. Just dont seem reliable enough to me. The 35d engine seems reliable but I worry about the rest or the car around it.

From my research it seems like in terms of engine reliability it goes from best to worst 35d, 35i, 50i, x5m.

It's not V6 its a straight inline engine I6.

OP
This all depends on what do you personally expect from the car. I am a diesel owner and would recommend it to anyone, reliable, fun to drive and has a potential for flash tuning.

Here is a 15 35i msport. Not a bad price. Not sure if Carfax os clean.

It took me more than 6 months to find a decent 35i msport. Price seems to be much higher than non-msport. I could have bought Xline with one year newer than mine (16 35i xdrive) for less money and still had some factory warranty. Love the msport with 469 wheels.

In UK, I would look for 35d with 3rd row or without. M Sport looks better. Biggest issues will be electronics (anything from screens and iDrive glitches all the way to steering wheel servo motor adjustment issues). Second biggest will be "maintenance" items like control arms, need to change oil in diffs, x-case, transmission. Might get occasional oil leak.
I mean it's a high maintenance car anyway you cut it, including fuel consumption.
The only good I see is: looks, handling, doesn't rust long time, pretty comfy ride.
If I had to choose, I would try to go with X1 lol - most reliable of X cars, but might be too little for many.
