Help! Wheel Fitment

I have a 2015 F15 M Sport. My installation shop just called me up and said my front wheels (without tires) are sitting about 1/8th of an inch from the control arm. Is that too close?

My current set up:

F15 19" OEM M-Sport Style 467 Wheels

19 x 9 wheels, with 37 mm offset. 255/50/19 Tires

New wheels/tires set up:

"OEM Style" Replica 612M Wheels

21x10.5 Front Wheels 45 mm offset and 285/35/21 tires

21x11.5 Rear Wheels 38 mm offset 325/30/21 tires

The factory OEM 612M wheels are the following:
21 x 10" 40 offset
21 x 11.5" 38 offset

Will the replica wheels fit OK or do I need spacers?

Interesting. I have the same factory wheel setup as your originals and will soon be upgrading to 22" reps with 295/30 & 335/25 and hope I don't run into similar issues. Offset on new wheels will be 40F & 35R.

Keep me updated on how it goes. I'm trying to figure out if I want to do spacers at this point. A few shops said they don't recommend it for our hubs since the bolts are part of the assembly. They've said it can cause vibration and cause stress on the hub.. although I've seen a lot of guy installing spacers on the forum.

Will do, should have the wheels in another 3 weeks (they are on back order). Do you have fender flares? I remember reading a thread on here that talked about certain early production years F15 X5's aren't ideal for spacers. I'm sure someone else more knowledgeable can set the record straight.

I have the body color fender flares from the M Sport package. Hmm.. Mine's 8/14 production.

Do some digging and report back or better yet maybe PM Ben (r33_RGSport). He'll know about the spacers.

Yeah Ben has been helpful. Just not sure if I want to go through with the spacers after doing more research. Haven't really seen any issues here on the forum but looks like there's a 50/50 split. Some people are totally for spacers and some are completely against.. I'm not sure if I'm willing to take the safety risk or subject the bearings to premature wear.

Is 1/8 of an inch clearance from the rim to control arm too close? Do I need to worry about flex at any point or will the wheel and control arm stay in a fixed position no matter how hard I drive her?

So I am about order some 21s. I don't understand offset. The bigger the number +40 vs +45 the more the wheel is pushed out? Less need for spacers?

It's the opposite. The ET number is how far the mounting surface is outwards, compared to the center of the rim.
ET00 would be a rim with the center and mounting surface being the same.
ET40 is a rim with the center of the wheel being 40mm inwards toward middle of car, compared to the mounting surface.
Adding a 25mm spacer to an ET40 wheel, would make the wheel be ET15.

Pulling the trigger on some wheels. I am going square setup with 285/40R21. I will get a little extra rubber for Indiana pot holes

Wheels are decent price 21x10.5 not sure of the offset. I will try for 30-38

If you use the website at the following link...and you have the wheel/tire specs for your old and new set-up...it will let you know (BEFORE you buy) how much the "inset" (toward the suspension) and "poke" (toward the fender) your new set-up will be compared to the original: www.willtheyfit.com

Compare both axles against each other old front vs new front & old rear vs new rear.

You can check realoem.com for offsets.
What wheels are you wanting to put on?

Are you lowered or plan to lower the car?
If wheels look/fit great with stock suspension, they might need spacers when lowered, to still look good.
Lowering springs are also firmer. So what feels like a nice ride on 21" and stock springs, will likely feel a lot harsher when lowered.

Do you have fender flares or plan to install them?
Fender flares are adding more width at the rear than the front, so wheels that fit non fender flared X5's, will need different sized spacers to look good with a flared set up if you add flares later on.

Be careful about the weight of the new wheels. Get cheap heavy wheels, and the potholes will feel just as bad. (Unsprung weight is bad for handling and acceleration.)
Get cheap light weight wheels, and you will need to have them straightened once a year.

If you run a square set up and same ET, you will need spacers at the rear, or wheels will look tucked in.

Lastly, welcome to X5 ownership. Go ahead and ask question, wait for answers.
Also know you can use google to search this forum, and you will find lots of info in regards to all kinds of already answered questions about the X5, that you might run into while owning the vehicle.
