Just have the pads changed to Ceramics, and be done with it.

Nothing more embarrassing than pulling up at the light and you're the one squealing. All kinds of things is running through people heads at that moment, including yours. As your fellow New Yorker, do like the last guy said and change pads to ceramic and be done with it. Squeal free. Stopping power tad bit less and that jerky brake bite is less but adapt your driving habits and you'll adjust. Not to mention. No more brake dust. And 80% of us are using PowerStop. Good luck.

Do you change both front and rear? Mine pads still have ton of life but I dont want the squeal noise anymore. What's the powerstop pad part numbers? Thanks.

My OEM pads have a lot of life left in them, but I can't take the squeal. Powerstop Z23 front and rear are going on today. Here are the part numbers from my order. Will report back in the thread I started after I bed them in and drive with them for a bit.

POWER STOP Z23919B (Z23-919B) Brake Pad (rear)
POWER STOP Z231738 (Z23-1738) Brake Pad (front)

It all depends on how long you can stand the squeal. From my experience it seemed to squeal more in the winter, so. For the most part all who have changed they pads were because of the squeal and the dust. OEM Pads just had to go lol.

Cut and paste from my brake thread....

Alright, pads are on. Initial impressions after bedding in are positive. I honestly didn't have a lot of seat time on the stock pads as I've only had my car for a few weeks, but I think these are equivalent in pedal feel. MAYBE a tad less initial bite, but that may be just because of what others have said here making me biased.

Anyway, not a peep out of them so far which was amazing in the stop and go traffic on the way home and pulling into my garage like a ninja. Obviously need to get some miles on them to see if the squeal stays away, but I'm ecstatic so far!

Good to see a satisfied customer, I'm just waiting for the old rotors and pads to wear out, so I can install all new hardware on my X5M.

Did you do the install yourself or was it done by local shop? Also, regarding the sensors is it required for those pads? Can we utilize the OEM sensors? I recently had my brakes done by dealer but I can't take the squealing and dust anymore.

I had my BMW indy do it. I'm guessing it's a pretty stright forward job, but it's been a long time since I've wrenched on a car. He chargered me $400. Pads and sensors were like $180. I would have paid $1k to get rid of the squeal. Still haven't driven more than a few hundred miles, but not a peep out of them and stopping power is great.

Note: You only need one sensor per axle. One of each part number I listed.

Can't speak to using the OEM sensors, but they are cheap, so I'd replace them.

Finally got around to doing the brakes myself. Started with the passenger side - took longer than I wanted. However, the driver side was a breeze after figuring out the correct process.

Also, I was able to do a decent bedding process. 80-20 8 times without coming to a complete stop.

It's been about 2 weeks and I'm very happy I did this! Dust is barely noticeable and squealing GONE.....

Which screws did remove to disassemble the front caliper? I've seen people remove the 2 internal Torx screws that pass through the caliper (fasten caliper to mounting bracket), which is a no-no according to TIS, or the 2 external Torx screws that attach the mounting bracket to the steering knuckle (TIS procedure).

Did you use BMW recommended Plastilube on the front pads or something else? Thanks.

11 - External Torx-Bolts
09 - Bracing Spring
06 - Guide Pins

I used the Brake-Pad paste provided by PowerStop.

Hyped to do mine. Tired of train sounds at stop signs.

Thanks for the links. I just got my f85 Saturday and the brakes are already making me not want to drive it. It’s super embarrassing.

Thank you so much for this info!

Just to confirm, these brakes will fit a F86, correct?
