Ticking noise while accelerating/load?
(I tried googling but found nothing lol). I have a '14 n55 with around 85k and realized theres a ticking noise while underload/accelerating that i noticed while driving with the window down and driving next to a wall/barrier so the sound bounces back to me.
It only happens when accelerating. The ticking doesn't happen if I rev'ed the engine while in neutral. It would also stop ticking when its switching gears. Its only when theres a load. Anyone have any thoughts? TIA!

Sounds like the exact problem I had. Would only come under load/acceleration with no sound revving the engine in neutral. It was the drive Axle. When I checked I noticed lots of black grease everywhere. The rubber boot tore and debris and dirt got in the bearings and messed everything up, had to get a drive Axle and popped it in, done everything back to normal

This is the drive Axle that goes into your wheel hub to spin the wheels (some call it Axle shaft output, CV Axle etc). Behind those black rubber boots are bearings. Over time the rubber loses it's elasticity and tears. When that happens dirt and debris gets inside the bearings and damaging them. That's where the clicking comes from, at least in my case. What you need to do is lay under the car and check the shaft that goes into the wheel, you have one in each wheel since it's all wheel drive, unless you have SDrive which is only rear. If your rubber boot is torn you should be able to see black grease around that area. If that is the case you need to replace your drive Axle

I'll post an update on mine as well. Tonight I did a test drive. The sound only comes on during low rpm load at low speed. It typically happens from 0-30/40mph under load not reaching high rpms. As I was driving around 15-20mph I would shift into N and give it about 2-3k worth of gas, no noise... Shift back into D give it the same 2-3k worth of gas and the noise is there. Parked in my driveway next to another car gave it some revs and nothing while in P. So it only happens while the engine is engaged with the transmission and the vehicle is under load. If it's not under load there is no noise moving or stationary. I got under the vehicle and checked the CV axle boots as mentioned above and both as clean and buttoned up. Very strange. |

Left foot on the brake. Vehicle in D. Rev to 3-4 K RPM, see if the sound happens while none of the running gear is moving. Will help you eliminate certain components. Post your findings back here. My bet is on your transfer case. For me, I can replicate my sound while doing this very easily, as the tick tick tick on decel is apparent. |

I have an 18 3.5 doing the exact same noise. I’m calling it in today for a service call. I have 48k miles just under the 50k warranty limit. I definitely want to get it in there.

Could be low speed pre-ignition (LSPI) which is becoming more apparent due to engineers pushing the boundaries on engine efficiency. My N63TU was doing this quite badly. I’ve changed oil to one that meets the SN Plus standard. I found a Shell 5w-30 that meets the SN Plus and LL-01 standards.
The engine noise has mostly gone and response at low rpm under power in Comfort mode is now ok. |
