35d manual says fuel filter every 40k?

Purchased a 35d CPO w/ 30k miles on Thursday and looking over the maintenance record and reading up on best maintenance practices, I was surprised to see the recommended change at 40k when the general recommedation is 20k. I'm going on a ~3k round trip at the end of the week and thinking about getting it replaced beforehand. Thoughts? Best to use a diesel shop opposed to dealer? Though the mechanics at the dealer are "certified", the lack of diesel volume and BMW recommendation isn't screaming confidence.

Thanks

It's a matter of religion. Just like with oil changes. Pick your cult and proceed accordingly.

Yes, that's a great write-up and one for the future. Given I don't want my family stranded somewhere between TX and FL, I'll opt for the pros this time around.

I appreciate the response!

I just had mine done yesterday by the dealer. March 2017 build and 31k miles. I had the same concerns as OP about getting stuck somewhere with a clogged filter. My service advisor said it wasn't due until December, but I decided to have it done now for peace of mind.

How much did the dealer charge for that service?

On the diesels it is definitely a DIY job, except it is hit or miss priming the fuel line after the filter swap. That has me wanting to take it in.

Yeah, you don't want to run HPFP on dry. It seems like they have a tendency to blow up.

I change mine every 15k miles. No priming. After I change it, it cranks right up. MAYBE takes 0.5 sec longer on the first crank up.

The fuel filter change is SUPER easy. The biggest PIA is the first time, removing the stock hose clamps. I just replaced them with the old style screw on hose clamps, and subsequent fuel filter change is even easier. Now the biggest PIA is removing the underside access panel....

I use HotShots EDT with LX4 with every tank full to increase lubricity. I use diesel extreme intermittently, usually around the time I do my oil change (5k intervals).
