High mileage X5
For those of you that own 5.0 X5 how is the reliability at higher milage? Im interested in buying a 2016 with about 70 000km and a bit worried.
If your X5 has higher mileage please share your experience. Thanks |

BMW N63 5.0 engine used in later X5 models has been problematic. Some of the more frequently reported problems include: excessive oil consumption, valve stems, timing chain guides. If considering a high mileage X5, N55 6 cylinder equipped vehicles are more reliable.

I currently own a 2015 X5 50i with 60,000 miles and it has been bulletproof. Not one issue. I love the sound, performance and would highly recommend it. Good luck with your decision.

There is no 5.0 x5. There is 4.4L n63tu engine that BMW puts into 50i x5.
Timing chain guides was and still is an issue for n63 engine - which is in previous generation of x5 (E70). Never heard of a single n63tu with timing chain guide issue. And even if there is one (I am remembering now something in 2014 550i that had some issues on facebook group)- it's certainly an outlier and not as widespread as in n63 - where those issues are VERY common. Valve stems are also a thing from the past - VERY common on n63 (that was put into E70 x5 and some other BMW cars). People just like to repeat same mantra coming from n63 era. n63tu is as solid as a V8 can be in luxury German cars. Remember it's not a Toyota or Hyundai. P.S. OP you have 2016 750Li in your signature, so you are actually driving n63tu equipped car. However, in your garage list you have 2012 750xi - which might as well have n63tu. Just think about it logically: n63 engine started eating oil and smoking white/blue smoke out of tailpipes on the very first year of production when BMW introduced it. It was widespread. Like REALLY widespread. To the point that almost every 2nd car with n63 engine was affected at some point. Now compare it with n63tu - that is already in production 4 years and I can barely remember 3 people here on forum who had valve stem issues or timing chain guides issues or engine failure because of it. The problem is that non car guys don't pay attention to details - for them n63 and n63tu is the same thing or close enough to not bother distinguishing between them. 44K is not bad at all. That said, your confidence will be bolstered by a review of its maintenance history, to know it was properly (regularly serviced) as well as any issues identified. |

Mine is a MY14, with only 40k km, only have three issue so far: vent pipe crack, soft close door unlatch when driving, and oil consumption 2qt every 16k km. This is not a Japanese car, so it will have its problems here and there. So extended warranty are always a good investment. Last edited by perry8912; 12-05-2018 at 01:06 PM.. |

There have also been a few reports of steering column adjust motor failures. The issue is that the steering column can not be adjusted up/down and/or in/out. Mine was replaced a few months ago (2015 5.0) with about 35,000 on the clock. My issue was intermittent but others have had an outright failure.

My 2013 550i with N63 engine had 44k miles when I sold it, no issues at all with JB1 running for ~36k miles.
My 2015 X5 50i with N63TU engine, stock, is at ~53k miles currently, no engine related issues.

Ok this thread is useless now. I ended up buying a 2018 with 25000km today. So excited. Its for my wife but shes not allowed to drive it
I ended up getting the 35i with the power pack tune which kicks up the horse 30 and the torque 40 I believe. Pics to come when I pick it up. |
