Question click/clunk when changing from D to R or vice versa

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to figure out if this click/clunk noise which sounds like it coming from somewhere in the rear is normal or not. If I change gear from drive to reverse, as soon as I touch the gas I hear a small click from the back. I can repeat this every time and I can even repeat it if I hold the brakes and go from drive to reverse or vice versa and give it a little gas to apply a slight load. Is it brake pads moving within calipers, drive train backlash, u-joints, diff bushings....any experiences from the people on the forum? Car is 2015 X5 with 48k miles. Thanks.

Do you notice a slight delay between hitting the gas and engagement of transmission/power?

No I don't think so but I will verify. For example I can go from drive to reverse, let off the brake, the car will start rolling (so it is engaged) and when I lightly press on accelerator I hear a small click. If I do this when my foot on the brake and press accelerator at the same time I can feel the torque being applied and it's not until it is torqued enough that I feel the click. I paid more attention and it sounds like the click comes from transfer case area.

Definitely no delay between gas and engagement but it looks like the driveshaft going to the transfer case moves back and forth slightly (not rotational but actually back and forth) when I depress accelerator which is normal when being torqued and the clunk happens after it slides and bottoms out (interference). Maybe that is normal but I've never heard it in my wife's X3.
