IMO, every expensive, luxury automobile is going to have a host of issues. There are certainly those in which issues tend to be more prevalent than others, but quality issues are everywhere (except maybe in Lexus, but that brand is super boring).
I have owned BMWs, Audis, Mercs, Jeep, Jag, Subaru, Chevy, etc. And I hang out with a lot of track guys and mechanics. The 2 by far most reliable brands are Subaru and Lexus. BUT, you have to like those cars to own them, and I don't particularly love them myself. Outside of that, BMWs have their share of issues, as do any other german car or American car. The question to me most often is less about the brand itself than it is about the model. There are some BMWs you couldn't give me for free because of how horribly ugly they are (E60 5-series, or F07 5 GT as an example), and others who are so riddled with issues, I wouldn't touch with a 10-ft pole after a certain mileage because of expense to maintain. Heck, I've probably spent nearly $8K in the last year on maintenance on my 2006 M3, and the car only has about 80k miles and still looks new. But I LOVE that car. The point I'm making is, in the end, you have to enjoy the way the car looks, make sure it's one you love to drive, and also select one that isn't too riddled with known issues - and there are plenty of known issues on every BMW. Only a blind fanboy would tell you otherwise. That said, I do generally prefer certain BMWs (particularly certain M cars) and Audis over most other cars myself. I would say, however, that lack of Android Auto is really not what should drive a purchasing decision. If you care more about that, buy a Hyundai or something. Everything is degrees.

My aunty who is 78yo disliked a Porsche 996 due to small size of vanity mirror in overhead sun visors - not large enough for her to check her makeup. However, Dodge Grand Caravan was perfect.
The day I will let some Waze or lack of full screen Instagram app on dashboard determine if I like the car or I’m leaving the brand - I’ll probably pinch myself hard to wake up from that horrible nightmare dream I’m having. My next rotation is at psychiatry Hospital and now I’ve seen everything. I’m ready. They have nothing compared to f15 forum. |

the new mercs look good. cant deny that.. bottom line: the few cars that you have in your list of potential replacements have shittier tech then your x5 has... and aside from maybe the f-pace they also come with rft...

This is such a weird post. You clearly don't spend a lot of time here but then you decide to post that you will leave BMW because of tires (which are replaceable) and tech that in fact many manufacture don't either as Android auto is not integrated as much as you think. Feel free to buy an iPhone. I could use a stock bump.

Sadly new cars are designed around gadgets instead of gadgets are designed in the car. Look at the MB. Well, we take a big flatscreen and smash it on the dash, lets build the rest around it. What you get is an ugly interior.
20 Years ago you read 90% about the engine, gear, suspention and driving. Now it's 90% about gadgets (with you have in your phone for years). Car tests on YT.... 2 minutes drive and 18 minutes sitting in the car pushing a screen with gatgets... |

i respect the perceived lack of luxury in the x5, it doesnt compare to similar price points. the x7 touts those options.
on the positive you are paying for a reliable, well driving vehicle. the options you list are 'disposable' imo. all really beautiful, but not the bmw driving experience |

I really like how the X5 drives, I needed 7 seats, and didn't want a massive car (and don't even mention a wagon, come on).
The infotainment was a huge bummer for me, I use Waze, Spotify and audible all the time, and have an Android phone. This is actually a decision making point for me, so I totally understand where you are coming from. Which is why... I just got an aftermarket version of the screen with Android, and am now super happy to have all this apps directly on the screen (just created a thread for it). Pb is you can't have it with the new version of the X5. Maybe you can consider a used F15 from 2016, or just acquire your lease? For the runflats, yes, they are not comfortable to ride, and I will not buy the same tires when they are worn out. But this is the easiest thing to change on the car, so for me there is no point here. |
