Is there a way to upgrade to mirrors with blind spot detection?

I have mirrors with no lane assist and was wondering if it was simply a "coding" change after swapping mirror caps or is there more to it. Is it part of the whole Active Drivers Assist option?

I'm not 100%, but I'm fairly confident the radar/sensors are in the back of the car, so it's not just swapping out mirrors.

Don’t bother, you’re not missing anything very useful. BMW’s execution of this feature is severely lacking. The indicators are far too dim to see clearly in daylight and the sensors don’t signal in circumstances that they should.

Others may disagree, but I’m thoroughly disappointed I paid for the option. Our Chevy Tahoe blind spot feature is miles better than BMW.

It will require sensors in rear bumper, wiring, modules, mirror cover, coding.
Damage, I would say about couple thousand before labor.
If you have a good driving habit, this feature is useless.
If you don't have good driving habit, this feature will make you lazy driver and maybe a dangerous driver.

I had it in my F15 X5, F06 650GC, G30 540i, and even my 958 Cayenne. To tell you the truth, I barely noticed it since I don't normally rely on it.

pick up a set of aspherical mirrors on Ebay. They are far better than the detectors.

As IndyJer said, it's not worth the effort.

Without coding, they only activate above 30 MPH.

In addition, I've found that it doesn't always activate in situations where you'd expect.

Therefore, I rely on my mirrors.

Thank you all for the responses. Looks like they aren't reliable and just not worth the trouble. I will continue to drive how I normally do . Wifey just thinks it would help so she was a little upset I didn't get the option...

Yes, totally understand. I just thought it would "help" , but I see that people are saying that sometimes they don't even activate correctly.

Of course it helps!

Blind spot is an area you don't normally see by looking into the rearview (side) mirrors when your head is in the normal driving position.
Yes, you can have EU style mirrors which reduce the blind sectors, but do not eliminate them completely.

The only way to substitute the system is to actually turn your head and look...

Everyone is spot-on here...I wouldn't pay $20 for our X5's blind spot system. Worst vehicle we've ever owned in regards to this feature. Add in a color blind guy and dark tint and you are rolling old school for sure. They don't even catch my eye very often at night.
