X6 i50 snow tires options?

I’m new to BMW and just bought 2016 X6 50i. It’s CPO. I’m debating what kind of snow tires i should get. Right now it has RFTs and I hate them. They don’t grip anything in snow. I almost did complete 360 on street the other day.
Should I stick with snow RFTs? Or regular snow tires (non RFTs). I get the risk of having no spare tire. To that concern, what kind of kit should i have in my car for emergency?

I have 21" Pirelli RFT in the summer and 20" Hancock winter tyres in the winter. No spare as I have the 3rd row seats, so I carry around an all in one repair kit - sealant and inflator run off the cigarette lighter.
Its amazing how much smoother the ride is on the softer winters and also the better mpg I'm currently getting.

Your RFT's are also summers, most likely. I was shocked to learn that about my X5 50i as well. Any chance you have the M Sport pack or 20" M Sport wheels?

Agree w Falafel, it's not so much the RFTS that suck in snow but rather you probably have summer Pirelli P zero RFTs.

I have them on summer, and just got BMW 491 winter package on Pirelli snow ice RFFTS and I love em. Ride is better and did great in some snow/ice during freezing temps we've recently had.

i contemplated switching off the RFTs but w kids and wife primarily driving the car i didn't want to take any chances of them having to pull over roadside and get out of the car to inflate or patch a tire.

Get dedicated snow tires if you are driving in snow. As for RFTs vs. non, I prefer keeping a spare wheel+tire in the trunk in the winter as my winter ones are non-RFTs and I don't want to inflate or patch on the roadside. No guarantee that even with RFTs, you may be able to drive back home or to a dealer with a flat. Worst case, just have bmw roadside assistance deal with them if you ever get a flat.

I have mostly had RFTs in past get nailed or blow out in a way that they could not be driven at all. That might just be me though.

Grab a set of Pirelli Scorpion's, pretty solid winter tire. Wish I made a smart decision and just bought a set for my car rather than trying to squeeze through this winter without a set.

I honestly don't know :-( I'm so clueless (yes, I still think sometimes why I even bought it! :-)
It's definitely NOT X6M. It's X6 xDrive50i but with M 'trim'? Too powerful for my need but it's the only great CPO in the color combo that I would consider.

what do you think of Michelin Latitude Alpin PA4? That's what recommended to me from BMW (and I checked around, the price is the same if I buy from TireRack or Discount Tires).

RFT is not the issue. The car is probably shod with summer tires. Get 4 RFT winter tires and 4 inexpensive wheels. Winter is pothole season and the last thing you want is to have to change a tire in the snow by the side of the road.

https://www.tirerack.com/snow/Select...lar=Base+Model

What kind of driving do you do? Performance winter tires are slightly biased in favor of cold cleared asphalt. Studless ice and snow are slightly biased in favor of ice and snow covered roads.

I have the 20" Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow staggered setup. Works great for cleared winter roads and is fine in snow and ice. Probably there are better tires for deep snow.

I am staying staggered and the dealer is going to mount the tires for me at delivery. I dropped shipped them already and they should see my vehicle a week from Monday.

It seems like a bunch of members, including, myself have gone with staggered Yokohama Bluearth v905 winters.

I had DWS06 the last 2 seasons and they were OK in snow, but not great. I never got stuck and didn't have trouble getting around but they definiitely didn't handle well.

The Yokohamas seems to be able to handle better in snow and have better ability to stop.
I wouldn't say it's worlds better than the Dws tires but definitely better and more confidence inspiring

The x5 rear tire is Extra wide. I believe it's the limiting factor.

Just set your expectations correctly.
Driving on winter tires in winter doesn't mean your car will handle like driving on summer tires in summer.
Ultimately, you'll be able to make it around in either tire. Just need to worry about those emergency stops and swerves. That's where the winter tires shine.

Also if one is going to be driving on unploughed roads, all seasons will be absolutely useless.

Using a staggered or square setup is a matter of preference. If you do get 2 sets of tires I would recommend 2 sets of wheels and not try to swap tires on the same wheels. So the winter set can be whatever size you want.

Everything with tires is a compromise.

- Conventional wisdom is narrower tires are better in snow and ice - up to a point.
- Conventional wisdom is wider tires are better in the dry - up to a point.
- Taller tire sidewall is less likely to result in damaged wheels when hitting potholes.
-Taller tire sidewall has more tire wall flex and a softer ride.
- There are more choice of winter tires for certain sizes or if you want RFT. Some sizes may be out of stock later in the season if you need a replacement.
- How do you want the car tires to look? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
- Winter tires only help up to a point. If too much snow gets underneath the car and all 4 tires lose traction, you are stuck.

Newbie,
I bought an 2017 X6 50i, with 20" staggered RFT, I also bought another set of rims with Pirelli Ice and Snow tires, also 20" staggered. I am in Wisconsin, no issues, good traction.

My 0.02 for OP: If you buy staggered, rotate your staggered once in a while between the left and right and keep them balanced. I have had terrible results with staggered in year 3-4-5 with previous awd bmws if they wear uneven, or if one tire needs to be replaced and the others have started to somewhat wear.

My decision was based on the amount of snow on the average we get here in New Jersey. Usually when we are hit with snow I am at home and really do not need to drive. So in my case having a great all-season was the choice for me and I know that it has limitations. If I lived out west in Colorado or Utah or Vermont or north of Boston I would have a dedicated winter setup

In CO, we mostly have sunny days. however, when it snows, it's nasty! Because they don't plow snow here that diligently (relying on sunny day that will come tomorrow, I guess). I personally don't ski so I don't go up 'the mountains' that often at all. However, I still need good set of tires to go out and about (again, the roads are not plowed properly). I never had to have winter tires. All season tires were enough for me. I got mine (winter non RFT tires) installed today. I politely expressed my concerns to the GM that I wasn't informed about the summer RFTs that came with the car and almost ran into accident when it snowed last time. He was very nice and offered to cover 1/2 of the winter tires cost ($700!).

That was great they covered half the bill. In my case I wanted specific tires and they are mounting them for me at no charge and store summer tires. They will swap them in May and store the DSW06 till the fall and swap back again.

How do you rotate your staggereds? Aren't they directional?
