OP
Thanks for the diy! I have plugs coming in the mail this Mon and plan to tackle the job. I have a '16 X5M but the engines are so similar that your diy makes for some good pre-reading! |

Just did this yesterday took about 2 hours. 70K on the dial and the plugs were rusty and full of carbon. Mav's write up was super helpful but one trick I found to get the coils off was a piece of rope to loop through the pull tab. Was able to get better leverage since they were sealed tight. I used some compressed air to get the dust/pollen and that wrap material all over the passenger side out of the way so they didn't fall into the combustion chambers. Much smoother start-up now, got to put some more miles on to see if MPG goes up since its been hovering consistently at at 15.

May I ask you why you wanted to gap it down to ~0.62MM? What happen of you don't? Just to learn some basics and try to get over rookie stage for owning a bimmer.

So is the general consensus that X5M plugs (BMW 12-12-0-039-634) gapped to .062mm are good to run with BM3 Stage 1 or are NGK plugs better? I read on the BM3 FAQ that stock S55 plugs are prone to cracking. Doesn't the S63TU and S55 run the same plugs? If so, wouldn't the X5M plugs be prone to cracking too?

What exact model of NGK plugs are recommended for the N63TU?

EDIT: I just got back from the dealer, and they gave me a very nice price, so looks like whole assembly is getting replaced. The new hose are twice as thick as the old ones, only concern is that vent pipe assembly with all the valves will require removing a lot more covers.

Yes. You should never trust the gap right out of the box.
