The stock gap I measured would be just fine for normal applications but if you're tuned I would reduce it to a similar length as discussed here. Worst case it's not a bad idea to simply measure them and ensure they're at least all the same

Ouch, they almost doubled it since I posted. I remember seeing some for about $6/plug on eBay too. Have not checked in the last week though.

Finally got home to my car late last night. I ordered the NGK spark plugs from Amazon arrived yesterday. I gapped the plus to 0.23", but since it was -10°C this morning with wind, I decided to have my fave indy do the deed. Took about an hour to get completed.

Results are excellent. No more stutter at WOT in high gears. I can feel better response immediately.

As for the factory maintenance plan plugs? Despite only 5k miles or so on them half of them were black and caked with carbon deposits. They looked like plugs had 50k on them not 5k... The gap on them were horrendous. One of them had a crooked ceramic insulator on electrodes. No wonder I was having problems.

Thinking about going with Ngk instead of the Bosch, always ran awesome on my 335 with n54/tuned. Did you go with the #97506 plug? The dealer probably didn’t even change them as there is no way in 5k the gap would be the way your describing!

Now that the oem are expensive again I would go with NGK over Bosch or even the Bosch M.

Yeah I went with the NGK 97506 spark plugs.

These are the factory ones that were pulled out. My paperwork actually says they were changed around 6500 miles ago, but again these don't look that great. I kind of suspect that only the left bank was changed because plugs were very loose in the cylinder head and there is a lot less carbon build up on them.

Thank you all

Many thanks for the great info and general moral support on this forum and particularly this thread. I just did a complete plug change on my n63tu yesterday. I used the X5M plugs, gapped to 0.60mm. No problems at all. I used anti-sieze on the threads and a dab of dielectric grease up the snout of all the coils. I swapped in the X5M air filters too, as the old (original equipment) were pretty dirty. Car runs great at sustained WOT and idles perfectly smooth.

I hadn't experienced any issues so I probably could have gotten another 10-20K miles out of the plugs. They looked uniformly great, just like the one in the image. I think I needed to "bond" with the car by doing some wrenching; it feels good to be able to do something besides write checks. Not to cast aspersions on folks who turn all the wrenching over to qualified techs - there's plenty of things I handle that way too.

I'm contemplating a BM3 tune, so the plugs were also a preparatory step for that. I'll keep you posted; I think everything is in place to make that go smoothly.

Thanks again, everyone. Cheers!

Is this a typo? Where can you fine oem x5m plugs for $4 each? Those plugs are close to $30 each.

tkelley86 Did you ever install the M spark plugs or did you stick with the stock ones? I just installed my Dinan tune on my 50i and I’m curious if you can share your experiences since this initial post? The engine delivery is perfect so wondering if I should consider as a proactive mod to limit my downside with issues down the road.

If it's running good, I would leave it alone. No need to mess with something that is working. I am still rocking the stock plugs on my '16 with over 20k miles and BM3 Stage 1 and it runs great.

When you finally decide to change the plugs (normal maintenance schedule or if a problem arises) that's when I'd move to a colder plug.
