Broken down

F15 with 47k miles on it. Had drivetrain problem warning and then tried to restart the car no warnings check faults ok but car shook at idle and stalled and there was smell of diesel in the car. Tried to restart again with same result and perhaps a burny smell.
it was bought approved used bmw and it is 6 months out of warranty and is awaiting an egr cooler recall fitment.
The dealer who has serviced it regularly and is due to do the egr cooler when the part becomes available is 15 miles away. We have moved home recently and another dealer is 5 miles away but hasn't known my car but services my other bmw cars.
Any ideas what the problem could be.
Should I take it to dealer no 1 who is far but knows the car for the past 18months etc.
The thought of the neighbours seeing my pride and joy being towed breaks my heart and so does the prospect of a eye watering bill ahead of me.

With a diesel it's either fuel pump, injectors, fuel filter, or stuck egr valve would be my guess.
Will the engine rev up? Can you drive it?

There is a couple threads about the fuel pumps on the diesel. I think it was because in the colder months water got into the tank and caused the pump to fail. Don't quote me on that, but search and hopefully it can shed some light on your problem.

You have to get it hooked on a computer and check for errors. It will tell you what's wrong.

I wonder if you have a leaky egr cooler, ie coolant leaking into the intake manifold. If you can check the coolant tank.

Something similar happened to me on my other car, the e60.

The gas I filled up from sonoco had water mixed in, there were heavy rains at that time.

My trusted Indy, debugged the issue for $75.00 which probably would have been $750.00 at any other $tealer.

Good luck!!

The coolant tank seems to have enough coolant anove the mun level but yes when i took the car in in October they did say there was a tiny leak but awaiting a fix since October as parts on order from germany. Frustrating! Anyway car is now in the dealership awaiting diagnosis.
