Heated steering wheel stopped working

Well, after 3,000 miles and after some Powertrain Malfunction warnings that disappeared after you turn the car off and turn it back on, I finally got the first problem in my F15. While driving this past weekend it was still a chilly night in MN and as always the first thing I do once I get into the car I turned the heated seats and heated steering wheel on. After couple minutes the seat was nice and warm but the steering wheel was still very cold. Since BMW engineers have mastered the design of the new heated steering wheel button I had no way to double check if it was on or off so I pressed it again and got nothing. By the time I got home and I could finally see the button I checked and the light did not come on at all.

I know some of you guys have experienced this problem and I was wondering if it is an easy fix or if the entire steering wheel (M Sport) has to be replaced.

It's likely a fuse or something simple.

Number of us are having issues with this. BMW has sent out a bulletin. My service guy told me there is a wait list for the part. Search this issue on the forum for more info.

Major ergonomic screw-up - not being able to see whether the heated wheel is on or off. My F25 is the same way. This is one item where the E83 X3 was better.

Any idea where i can find this bulletin? I only found one thread in this forum about this issue but it does not say how it was solved.

SUBJECT
Heated Steering Wheel Not Working, Fault Code 30340 Stored
MODEL
F15
Produced from 7/14/13 to 10/31/13

SITUATION
The LED for the heated steering wheel operation does not light up and the heated steering wheel does not work.
The Body Domain Controller (BDC) has a fault code “30340 Steering column switch center (SZL) (LIN): Internal hardware error” stored.

The fault code entry may be stored on vehicles that are not equipped with option 248 (heated steering wheel).

CAUSE
Software error in the steering column switch center (SZL)
PROCEDURE
Diagnose the vehicle using ISTA to determine if a fault code 30340 is stored in the BDC.
Note: When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only “XX.XX” V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.

If the fault code is stored and the vehicle is not equipped with option code 248 (heated steering wheel) disregard the fault.
If the fault is stored and the vehicle is equipped with option code 248, follow the test plan recommendations. The test plan will reset the fault and if the fault re-occurs, will prompt for SZL replacement.
An improved SZL was introduced in 10/31/13.
PARTS INFORMATION
Part Number Description Quantity
Refer to ETK Steering Column Switch Center 1 if needed
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty.
Defect Code: 61 12 55 02 00

Labor Operation: Labor Allowance: Description:
00 00 006 Refer to KSD2 Performing “vehicle test” (with vehicle diagnosis system – checking faults)
and if necessary, also
61 21 528 Refer to KSD2 Charging battery
and as necessary
61 00 006 Work Time (WT) Performing vehicle diagnosis – test module
and if necessary
61 31 513 Refer to KSD2 Replace steering column switch center
and
61 00 730 Refer to KSD2 Programming/encoding control unit(s)
Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.

Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the “Search” button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.

Even though work time labor operation code 61 00 006 ends in “006,” it is not considered a Main labor operation.

Work time (WT) labor operation 61 00 006 requires an individual punch time.

If a control module was working properly and/or had no related faults stored prior to vehicle programming and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization, this additional work must be claimed with separate labor operations under the defect code listed above; refer to KSD2.

Other Repairs

If performing other ISTA diagnostics and their related test plans results in eligible and covered work, claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.
