How can I get Apple CarPlay?

I recently bought a 2014 X5 and cannot get CarPlay to work with an iPhone 11. From what I've read here I need to update my idrive software. Will an update make it work?

Welcome to the forum. And congratulations on the X5.
Unfortunately a simple software update will not do it. There are hardware requirements that the 2014 X5 doesn't meet.
If you do a quick search on the forum you will see what needs to be changed. Mostly the whole head unit and generally not worth it. But there are options to add carplay as an addition to your radio. A somewhat easy process and depending on where you get the parts from you are looking at $350 to almost $1000.

I have a 2014 X5 and have decided to hold off on Carplay for now.

carplay is only available from the factory on 2017 and later in the f15 x5. there are some third party solutions. search the forums or check out youtube.
