I did look in the warranty booklet and found that cars sold in New Jersey are covered for 7 years or 70K miles by the California emissions law. The EGR valve and Exhaust gas cooler are included.

Hi to all.

Gotta quick question. Im about to order a diesel this week. and i was wondering if short trips (5km to work) will be bad for the diesel engine? especially during the winter. would the engine warm up in time?

Thanks.

^ Yes, and really not great for gasoline engines either, as you're not allowing the engine to reach full operating temperature. If your commute is that short, a diesel engine is not for you.

My commute is under 2 miles and my diesel seems to handle the "job" quite well. I only get ~20MPG but it is better than the 15-16MPG I got from my X3 gasser.

Also, any idea on why BMW has a "no additives" warning on the fuel cap?

So can someone explain what exactly happens once it is clogged and how can you tell? I drove the X5 I sold for 5,500 miles and no issues...
Informative for my next diesel...

I didn't notice any difference in how my car ran, but I had a check engine light. The dealer determined that the exhaust gas cooler was clogged with carbon.

Ahh okay. Thanks for the reply. I'll just turn on the car in advance so it can get to temp by the time I reach work. (I'm hoping that would help?)
Will definitely be putting in more kms during the weekend!

My wife used to drive our previous 2014 X5 normally with short commutes...never a problem...I do not think this subject applies to new engines anymore...

Oh geez. I'm getting nervous getting the diesel now. Hey shaw. Which gas station do you use to fill up?

A couple of things I have learned owning a fleet of Peterbilts, skip the bio diesel since we have problems with clogging the fuel filters. Use a heavy use filling station for cleaner fuel and storage tanks. These newer trucks of mine have many sensor and filter problems in our exhaust. Most problems come up in colder weather since Def can freeze and does have a shelf life. All of this comes from our EPA and carb regulations. DEF or urea aka blue tech or cow pee is European technology, the truck repair shops are packed with trucks with problems, something I have just learned to deal with. Cat no longer makes engines for Peterbilts, Kenworth ext. My engine warranty has tripled in the few years due to all of these problems.I think if you go diesel just make sure you have warranty to back you if you are going to keep it past 50k.

Agreed.

DPF will clog up very quickly with a regular journey profile that short, unless you do longer journeys at the weekend to enable DPF regen to take place.

96,600 kms on my odometer now, no issues since the EGR temp sensor & pressure switch went in the first 5,000 kms.

No issues either with my 2015 x5d with 34,297 km. However my 2012 x5d with 73,000 km had the manifold replaced after the walnut blasting didn't work.
